My Shifting Gaming Preferences ? Life and Times of a Philippine ...

Posted: October 25, 2011 by pointyman2000 in Articles, Roleplaying Games

I was speaking with Tarathiel23, one of the people from my gaming group earlier today, and he noted that I seemed to be a great deal more motivated in running games than playing them, and inquired to why that was the case.? After a moment of reflection, I told him that it was probably because I?d somehow grown more critical about the games that I?d like to play as of late.

This isn?t to say that the other GMs I know suck, but more of an issue of taste and my own inability to enjoy certain types of play.? Each and every one of the GMs in my group are good at their own thing, but so far, I?m really not quite feeling up to playing in any of the campaigns they?ve pitched.? I?m trying to go over the reasons as to why so that I can probably come to terms on why I don?t seem to be quite so motivated anymore.

  1. Freewheeling anime-inspired hijinks are no longer appealing to me ? Ranma 1/2 was fun to watch, and still gets a few chuckles out of me to this day, but seeing it in the context of an RPG wherein my character has to deal with or endure silliness is very difficult for me to get into nowadays.? Perhaps I?ve grown jaded, but that sort of thing is an almost guaranteed pass from me.
  2. I?m playing more for catharsis now than ever before ? Age and responsibilities tend to color my preferences, so playing in a game where my character is able to actually enact lasting and significant changes that matter to him at a personal level is something that I greatly enjoy more now.? I?m done with my doom-and-gloom fix, and would probably not enjoy a game where survival is the greatest reward in a session.
  3. I no longer have the time for severely complicated systems, or systems with multiple rules exceptions ? As was noted in an earlier post of mine, I?m not exactly the rules-happy guy I used to be a decade ago.? HERO still has a special place in my heart, but I doubt that I?ll be able to get a game up and running with the same kind of prep work I had before.? I can?t even look at the default rules for Exalted without feeling queasy.
  4. I?m tired of the same old game offerings ? This might be more than a little hypocritical, but I?m starting to get tired of the Exalted and L5R treadmill that our group tends to go with.? I love both settings, but at this point unless the campaign approaches either of these settings with a fresh take that explores new avenues?? I?ll probably pass.

Again this isn?t a criticism of any of the GMs in my group, but more of me trying to explore what it is that demotivates me when it comes to going for a particular campaign pitch as a player.? These days I see GMing as the only way to break out of the rut and hopefully get to try out new and less complicated approaches to get the same kind of fun out of the hobby as I used to.

China urges North Korea to build on U.S. dialogue (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China wants North Korea to deepen talks with South Korea and the United States in the hope of restarting nuclear negotiations, the visiting Chinese vice premier told his North Korean counterpart, state media reported on Monday.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang also told North Korean Premier Choe Yong-rim that Beijing would stay a firm ally of Pyongyang, which is contending with food shortages, international isolation and trying to ensure a smooth succession.

Li, 56, is the favorite to become premier from early 2013, when Wen Jiabao steps down.

Pyongyang has stirred regional tensions with its nuclear arms ambitions, missile tests and deadly confrontations across the divided peninsula last year. But recently it has reached out to Seoul and Washington and will hold talks with U.S. officials in Geneva later on Monday.

"China supports North Korea maintaining a correct focus on engagement and dialogue," Li told Choe on Sunday, according to China's official Xinhua news agency.

It was in China's and other countries' interests for Pyongyang to improve ties with Seoul and Washington, avoiding instability on the peninsula, said Li.

North Korea should seek "early outcomes from the dialogue, and restarting six-party talks as soon as possible to advance the denuclearization of the (Korean) peninsula," he added.

The intermittent six-party talks bring together China, Japan, Russia, both Koreas and the United States. They reached an agreement in September 2005 under which the North agreed to abandon its nuclear programs in exchange for economic and diplomatic incentives to be provided by other parties.

The talks and the agreement were a diplomatic trophy for Beijing. But North Korea walked out of the negotiations more than two years ago after the United Nations imposed fresh sanctions for a long-range missile test. The following month it conducted a second nuclear test.

Beijing has stood by the North, which it regards as a brittle but vital bulwark against the influence of the United States and its allies. But China has also tried to build ties with South Korea, a much bigger trade partner, and to revive the talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament.

Ahead of the talks in Geneva, U.S. officials have said North Korea must make real steps to heal ties with South Korea and show it is sincere about nuclear disarmament before the six-party talks can resume.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Beijing hoped the talks in Switzerland "will help to enhance mutual confidence and understanding."

"We also hope that this engagement will create conditions for appropriately resolving problems facing the restart of the six-party talks," she told a regular news briefing.

During his three-day visit to North Korea that began on Sunday, Li is being accompanied by senior diplomats and economic officials, including Chen Yuan, chairman of China Development Bank.

China fears that the North's frayed and isolated economy could fuel instability as its leader, Kim Jong-il, lays the ground for a leadership succession in the dynastic state, and Li pressed Beijing's case for stronger trade ties.

Both sides should "maintain the steady and rapid growth of bilateral trade, promoting key cooperative projects in a positive and steady-handed way," Li told Choe.

China has sought to draw North Korea closer with economic incentives and trade between the two countries grew to $3.1 billion in the first seven months of 2011, an 87 percent increase from the same period last year, according to Chinese customs data.

After visiting the North, Li travels to South Korea from Wednesday for two days.

UN council elections head into extra rounds (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Pakistan, Morocco, Guatemala, and Togo were elected to two-year Security Council terms on Friday, but the balloting for the fifth seat went into extra rounds after U.N. members failed to give a majority to one of two remaining candidates for the East European seat.

Balloting went into a fifth round late Friday afternoon after the previous tally showed 98 votes for Slovenia and 93 for Azerbaijan. Hungary, which also had been a candidate for the sole East Europe slot, was earlier knocked out of the running due to a low vote count.

U.N. General Assembly members elected Pakistan, Morocco and Guatemala in the first round when it gave each the two-thirds majority it needed to join the United Nations' most powerful body. Togo was elected in the third round.

The new members will assume their posts on Jan. 1 and serve through the end of 2013.

Security Council seats are highly coveted because they give countries a strong voice in matters dealing with international peace and security.

"We are honored and privileged to join such an esteemed body and look forward to the positive contributions we will make to its work in maintaining and promoting international peace and security," said Togo President Faure Gnassingbe, who traveled to New York for the vote.

The new makeup puts Pakistan on the council alongside its regional rival India, which like Colombia, Germany, Portugal and South Africa is serving a two-year term that wraps up at the end of 2012. They'll also serve with the five permanent, veto-wielding members: China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States.

"We had a very tough fight," Pakistani Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon said. "Hopefully we will be working well with all of the other council members, especially India."

Because Guatemala has never recognized a Palestinian state, the new council may also be less inclined to support the Palestinians' request for U.N. membership in the unlikely chance the bid carries into the new year. Palestinian diplomats said this week they are trying to muster support for a Nov. 11 vote.

The only certain winner going into Friday's election was Guatemala, which ran unopposed for the sole seat for Latin America and the Caribbean. Two seats for Africa, one for Asia and one for Eastern Europe were all contested.

The five new members replace Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria.

Because ballots are secret, multiple rounds of votes are common in Security Council elections. In 2007, a runoff between Guatemala and Venezuela went 47 rounds before Panama was finally offered, and accepted, as the Latin America candidate.

Basque separatists ETA say end armed struggle (Reuters)

MADRID (Reuters) ? Basque separatists ETA, Europe's last major guerrilla group, called a halt to 50 years of violence on Thursday.

ETA's fight to carve out an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southern France has been severely weakened by the arrests of hundreds of its members in recent years and seizures of its weapons.

"ETA has decided the definitive cessation of its armed activity. ETA calls upon the Spanish and French governments to open a process of direct dialogue with the aim of addressing the resolution of the conflict," the group said in a statement through Basque-language newspaper Gara and an online video.

Three masked ETA members sat behind a table to read the statement in the video and raised their fists in the air at the end of the statement. The group has come under pressure from its own political arm and former members, now in prison, to disband.

The three did not say whether the guerrilla force would turn in its weapons, which Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has said is a condition for any negotiations with ETA.

The government welcomed the announcement.

"This has been possible thanks to the mettle and strength of Spanish society, guided by the rule of law, which triumphs today as the only possible way for people to coexist," said Zapatero.

"Our democracy will be one without terrorism, but not one without memory." ETA called a permanent ceasefire in January which was dismissed by Zapatero as meaningless unless they turned in arms.

The Socialist government is deeply unpopular and expected to lose a general election on November 20 due to voter anger over a sluggish economy and a sky-high unemployment.

Even if his government can claim victory in the decades-long effort to bring an end to ETA, analysts have said it will be difficult for the Socialists to make any political gains because voters are more concerned about jobs.

ETA has not killed anyone since March 2010 when a French police officer was killed by members of the group leaving the scene of a robbery. Spain's government says ETA has killed 829 people during its decades of guerrilla activity.

The ETA announcement follows a conference in the Basque country on Monday when international leaders and ex-politicians appealed to ETA to end its struggle.

Mainstream Spanish politicians and press poured scorn on Monday's peace conference and the conclusions it reached. Most Spanish newspapers denounced it as a ruse by ETA's banned political wing to attract international attention and strengthen its hand in possible future negotiations.

The center-right People's Party, which polls show will win the November election, said in a statement on Twitter that ETA's pledge to end armed struggle was meaningless unless the group turned in its weapons.

Democrats block GOP jobs bill over spending cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Senate has blocked Republican-backed legislation that would prevent the government from withholding 3 percent of payments to government contractors.

The legislation failed to get the 60 votes needed to end a Democratic filibuster late Thursday. Many Democrats and President Barack Obama support the idea but opposed it Thursday because it would be paid for with $30 billion in cuts from domestic agency spending. The White House promised a veto.

The withholding law was passed in 2006 by a GOP-controlled Congress. The idea then was to make sure contractors couldn't duck their taxes. Advocates of repealing it say it will help create jobs, especially from contractors with smaller profit margins on large projects.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid promised that the withholding requirement would be repealed in coming weeks.

Protesters remain outside St. Paul's Cathedral (AP)

LONDON ? Hundreds of anti-capitalist protesters mingled with bemused bank workers outside London's St. Paul's Cathedral Monday, as welcoming but wary cathedral staff urged demonstrators not to deter tourists wanting to visit the historic building.

Around 500 demonstrators gathered outside the cathedral over the weekend as part of the global Occupy Wall Street protests. About 200 pitched tents around the cathedral, and have set up a makeshift kitchen, toilets and an information center.

The protesters, a loosely organized group inspired by the month-old movement in New York against corporate wrongdoing, seemed to have settled in for a long stay, but it was unclear how long they would be allowed to remain.

The ground immediately outside the church is owned by St. Paul's, which permitted the protest camp on the weekend, while the local authority also partly owns a stake in the nearby churchyard, part of London's medieval heart.

"It's quite a complicated, ancient melange of different interests," said the Rev. Rob Marshall, a spokesman for St. Paul's.

"The need is to keep access for pilgrims and tourists," he added.

Dean Graeme Paul Knowles of St. Paul's said prayer services had continued as normal over the weekend, but the "last few days have not been without various challenges." In his statement, he added that the protesters have been careful to make sure they do not block people trying to enter the cathedral but said cathedral staff, police and community leaders are "monitoring the situation carefully."

Protesters had planned to demonstrate outside the nearby London Stock Exchange, but they were turned back and returned to the foot of the cathedral, a London landmark nestled next to the city's financial district.

Designed by 17th-century architect Christopher Wren, its domed roof still dominates the London skyline. Princess Diana married there in 1981, her long wedding train tumbling over the steps where the protesters have set up their base.

Police tried to move protesters away from St. Paul's on Sunday but senior priest Giles Fraser said the demonstrators were welcome to stay and asked police officers to move instead.

One protester, Ian Chamberlin said the camp was well organized and peaceful.

"We have shared rules about things like not drinking, not taking drugs. We want to make sure the camp is a safe place to be," he said. "There's something symbolic about staying here, near the stock exchange, to pass on our message that the banking system isn't serving the needs of ordinary people, it is not a democratic force."

Chamberlin, 27, said he is willing to remain at the camp as long as he is allowed to.

Police said they can't remove the protesters as long as they have the landowner's permission, but will arrest anyone who commits a crime. Eight people were arrested over the weekend near St. Paul's, mainly for public disorder offenses, but police said the protests had been mainly peaceful.

Sit-down protests can be hard to dislodge. An anti-war vigil outside Britain's Parliament has continued for 10 years, despite repeated legal attempts by local authorities to move it. A handful remain even after legal challenges limited the protesters to the sidewalk, rather than the grass area of Parliament Square.

Thousands of people demonstrated against corporate greed in cities across Europe on Saturday, along with much smaller protests in cities across the U.S.

Rioters in Rome hijacked a peaceful protest, smashing bank and store windows, tearing up sidewalks and torching vehicles. The mayor of Rome says they caused at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage.

At debate, focus is on fast-rising Herman Cain

(AP) ? Herman Cain has risen fast. Now the question is: Will he fall?

As Republican presidential hopefuls were preparing for a debate here Tuesday night, Cain has been facing more and more intense scrutiny as his poll numbers have jumped upward.

Now that he's in the national spotlight, he's already had to apologize for comments he made over the weekend calling for an electric fence on the Southern border with Mexico.

At a campaign stop Monday in Arizona, Cain appeared with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an aggressive anti-immigration proponent. "It was a joke," Cain said emphatically during a news conference. "I apologize if I offended anyone. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa."

Cain told an audience in Tennessee on Saturday that the fence is "going to be electrified. And there is going to be a sign on the other side that says, 'It will kill you.'"

Immigration already has flared on the campaign trail ? and contributed to the sinking of another fast-rising GOP candidate. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has struggled to explain why he signed a law giving in-state tuition breaks to illegal immigrants at Texas universities. When he first entered the race, he was at or near the top of many national polls. He's fallen back since, and Cain has emerged as the more popular alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Also participating in Tuesday's debate are Romney, Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Missing is former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who's boycotting the Nevada caucuses in defense of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary. Nevada has scheduled its contest for Jan. 14, and Republican officials are pressuring Romney and other Republicans to join Huntsman's boycott if the state refuses to hold the caucuses later in January.

Also potentially at issue on Tuesday is the foreclosure crisis. So far, it's been almost forgotten on the campaign trail, but the candidates will probably have little choice but to address it. Nevada has the nation's highest unemployment rate, a statistic that's driving the highest foreclosure rate in the nation. It's the root of the economic crisis, but it barely has been discussed as issues like immigration and vaccines for children have dominated the GOP primary.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Demonstrators from the Occupy Wall Street encampment in New York City paraded to a Chase bank branch Saturday, banging drums, blowing horns and carrying signs decrying corporate greed. Marchers throughout the country emulated them in protests that ranged from about 50 people in Jackson, Miss., to at least a thousand each in such larger cities as Denver and Pittsburgh.

"Banks got bailed out. We got sold out," the crowd of as many as 1,000 in Manhattan chanted. A few protesters went inside the bank to close their accounts, but the group didn't stop other customers from getting inside or seek to blockade the business.

Police told the marchers to stay on the sidewalk, and the demonstration appeared to be fairly orderly as it wound through downtown streets.

Later, police arrested 24 people at a Citibank branch near Manhattan's Washington Square Park. Most were detained for trespassing after they ignored a request by the bank to leave, police said.

Overseas, violence broke out in Rome, where police fired tear gas and water cannons at some protesters who broke away from the main demonstration, smashing shop and bank windows, torching cars and hurling bottles. Dozens were injured.

Tens of thousands nicknamed "the indignant" marched in cities across Europe, as the protests that began in New York linked up with long-running demonstrations against government cost-cutting and failed financial policies in Europe. Protesters also turned out in Australia and Asia.

Across the Atlantic, hundreds protested in the heart of Toronto's financial district. Some of the protesters announced plans to camp out indefinitely in St. James Park. Protests were also held in other cities across Canada from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the U.S., among the demonstrators in New York withdrawing their money from Chase was Lily Paulina, 29, an organizer with the United Auto Workers union who lives in Brooklyn. She said she was taking her money out because she was upset that JPMorgan Chase was making billions, while its customers struggled with bank fees and home foreclosures.

"Chase bank is making tons of money off of everyone ... while people in the working class are fighting just to keep a living wage in their neighborhood," she said.

"We aren't going to be a part of this system that doesn't work for us," said another demonstrator withdrawing her money, 20-year-old Brooklyn College student Biola Jeje.

Other demonstrations were planned around the city all day Saturday, including an anti-war march to mark the 10th anniversary of the Afghanistan War.

Among the people participating in that march was Sergio Jimenez, 25, who said he quit his job in Texas to come to New York to protest.

"These wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were all based on lies," Jimenez said. "And if we're such an intelligent country, we should figure out other ways to respond to terror, instead of with terror."

Elsewhere in the U.S., nearly 1,500 gathered Saturday for a march past banks in downtown Orlando. About 50 people ranging from college students to older people met in a park in downtown Jackson, Miss., carrying signs calling for "Health Care Not Warfare." Organizers expected more people to come and go during the day.

Some made more considerable commitments to try to get their voices heard. Nearly 200 spent a cold night in tents in Grand Circus Park in Detroit, donning gloves, scarves and heavy coats to keep warm, said Helen Stockton, a 34-year-old certified midwife from Ypsilanti, and plan to remain there "as long as it takes to effect change."

"It's easy to ignore us," Stockton said. Then she referred to the financial institutions, saying, "But we are not going to ignore them. Every shiver in our bones reminds us of why we are here."

Hundreds more converged near the Michigan's Capitol in Lansing with the same message, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Rallies drew young and old, laborers and retirees. In Pittsburgh, marchers also included parents with children in strollers and even a doctor. The peaceful crowd of 1,500 to 2,000 stretched for two or three blocks.

"I see our members losing jobs. People are angry," said Janet Hill, 49, who works for the United Steelworkers, which she said hosted a sign-making event prior to the march.

Retired teacher Albert Siemsen of Milwaukee said at a demonstration there that he'd grown angry watching school funding get cut at the same time that banks and corporations gained more influence in government. The 81-year-old wants to see tighter Wall Street regulation.

Around him, protesters held signs reading, "Keep your corporate hands off my government," and "Mr. Obama, Tear Down That Wall Street."

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick visited protesters in Boston's Dewey Square for the first time. He said that after walking through the camp, he better understands the range of views and was sympathetic to concerns about unemployment, health care and the influence of money in politics.

And in Denver, about 1,000 people came to a rally in downtown Denver in support of the movement.

The Rev. Al Sharpton led a march in Washington that was not affiliated with the Occupy movement but shared similar goals. His rally was aimed at drumming up support for President Barack Obama's jobs plan. Thousands of demonstrators packed the lawn in the shadow of the Washington Monument to hear labor, education and civil rights leaders speak.

Intruder detected: Raise the alarm!

Friday, October 14, 2011

When a thief breaks into a bank vault, sensors are activated and the alarm is raised. Cells have their own early-warning system for intruders, and scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble, France, have discovered how a particular protein sounds that alarm when it detects invading viruses. The study, published today in Cell, is a key development in our understanding of the innate immune response, shedding light on how cells rapidly respond to a wide range of viruses including influenza, rabies and hepatitis.

To sense invading agents, cells use proteins called pattern recognition receptors, which recognize and bind to molecular signatures carried only by the intruder. This binding causes the receptors to change shape, starting a chain-reaction that ultimately alerts the surrounding cells to the invasion. How these two processes - sensing and signalling ? are connected, has until now remained unclear. The EMBL scientists have now discovered the precise structural mechanism by which one of these receptors, RIG-I, converts a change of shape into a signal.

"For a structural biologist this is a classic question: how does ligand binding to a receptor induce signalling?" says Stephen Cusack, who led the work. "We were particularly interested in answering it for RIG-I, as it targets practically all RNA viruses, including influenza, measles and hepatitis C."

In response to a viral infection, RIG-I recognises viral genetic material ? specifically, viral RNA ? and primes the cell to produce the key anti-viral molecule, interferon. Interferon is secreted and picked up by surrounding cells, causing them to turn on hundreds of genes that act to combat the infection. To understand how RIG-I senses only viral RNA, and not the cell's own RNA, and sounds the alarm, the scientists used intense X-ray beams generated at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to determine the three-dimensional atomic structure of RIG-I in the presence and absence of viral RNA, in a technique called X-ray crystallography. They found that in the absence of a viral infection, the receptor is 'sleeping with one eye open': the part of RIG-I that senses viral RNA is exposed, whilst the domains responsible for signalling are hidden, out of reach of the signalling machinery. When RIG-I detects viral RNA, it changes shape, 'waking up' the signalling domains, which become accessible to trigger interferon production. Although the EMBL scientists used RIG-I from the mallard duck, this receptor's behaviour is identical to that of its human counterpart.

"RIG-I is activated in response to viral RNA, but a similar mechanism is likely to be used by a number of other immune receptors, whether they are specific to viruses or bacteria," says PhD student Eva Kowalinski, who carried out most of the work.

Thus, these findings contribute to a broader understanding of the workings of the innate immune system ? our first line of defence against intruders, and the subject of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The work was carried out within the framework of the International Unit of Virus Host-Cell Interactions, a collaboration between EMBL, the University Joseph Fourier (UJF), in Grenoble, and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and also involved contributions from the laboratory of Denis Gerlier at the Institut National de la Sant? et de la Recherche M?dicale (INSERM), in Lyon, France.

Cardinals Beat Brewers: Jaime Garcia, Yadier Molina, Matt Holliday Lift St. Louis Within Win Of Pennant

ST. LOUIS ? The bumbling Brewers made four errors that led to three unearned runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals survived a short start by Jaime Garcia to beat Milwaukee 7-1 Friday night and take a 3-2 lead in the NL championship series.

Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday had three hits each for St. Louis, which burst to a 3-0 lead in the second when Molina doubled in a run and third baseman Jerry Hairston Jr. allowed Garcia's grounder to go through his legs. Holliday capped the scoring with a two-run double in the eighth.

"We just keep finding ways to win," Holliday said. "It's a team, it's a group effort. It's never one guy."

Milwaukee's infield nearly had a cycle of errors, with second baseman Rickie Weeks and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt also committing miscues along with reliever Marco Estrada. Weeks had committed the Brewers' only two errors in the first four games of the series.

"You give these guys extra outs and they are going to hurt you," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.

The Cardinals have won 14 straight games on getaway days, a run that began on Aug. 7 at Florida. The win gave players another opportunity to chant "Happy Flight! Happy Flight!"

St. Louis can wrap up the best-of-seven series and its 18th NL pennant on Sunday in Milwaukee. Edwin Jackson goes for the Cardinals against Shaun Marcum in a rematch of pitchers from Game 2, won by St. Louis 12-3 as neither starter received a decision.

The NL winner hosts the World Series opener against Detroit or Texas on Wednesday.

"We're having a good series right now and, hopefully, we can do it for one more game," Molina said.

Milwaukee had not made more than three errors in a game during the regular season, but the Brewers' sloppiness reached a near-record level. Milwaukee was one shy of the LCS record for errors in a game, shared by the 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers and 1976 New York Yankees, according to STATS LLC.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa had a quick hook once again. Garcia opened with four scoreless innings, then allowing three hits and a sacrifice in a span of four at-bats in the fifth, with Corey Hart singling in a run. With two and on and two outs, Octavio Dotel relieved and struck out Braun.

Dotel (1-0) struck out two in 1 1-3 hitless innings, combining with three other relievers for 4 1-3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief. Jason Motte got four outs for his second save of the series, leaving Cardinals relievers 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 22 2-3 innings. St. Louis starters are 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA.

Only one St. Louis starter has lasted long enough to qualify for a victory, with Chris Carpenter working five innings in Game 3. The previous team to have a starter not pitch into the sixth in the first five games of a postseason series was the 1984 San Diego Padres in the World Series, according to STATS.

With Milwaukee down 5-1 and trying to rally with two on in the eighth, lefty Marc Rzepczynski relieved and struck out Prince Fielder.

Fielder is 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and two walks against Rzepczynski.

Zack Greinke (1-1) left pitches over the plate in some key spots and allowed five runs ? just two earned ? and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings with no strikeouts and two walks.

Hart had three hits, breaking out from a 1 for 12 start to the series.

St. Louis had been hitless in 15 at-bats with runners in scoring position ? and 22 at-bats with runners on base ? before Molina's RBI double off the right-field fence. Hart just missed on a leaping attempt at the right field fence.

Hairston saved at least one run at third base with a spectacular diving catch to his left on Nick Punto's low liner for the second out. But when he botched Garcia's easy grounder, St. Louis was up 3-0.

Garcia's RBI groundout made it 4-0 in he fourth, the first RBI by a Cardinals pitcher in the postseason since Jeff Suppan homered in the 2006 NLCS against the Mets.

Albert Pujols had an RBI single in the sixth to chase Greinke.

NOTES: Braun doubled in the first and has reached base safely in the opening inning of nine straight games, going 7 for 7 with a walk and hit by pitch. He has 22 hits in the postseason, matching the franchise record by Paul Molitor and Robin Yount. ... Chuck Berry, a St. Louis musical icon, performed the national anthem with his daughter, Ingrid. Wearing his trademark sailor's cap and a No. 84 Cardinals jersey (his age), Berry mostly watched and threw in occasional harmony. ... Cardinals Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith threw a one-hop first pitch with injured St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright on the receiving end for the third straight night.

Hear ye, hear ye: UK royal heirs may wed Catholics

A 300-year-old ban on heirs to the British throne marrying Roman Catholics would be overturned and discrimination against royal daughters removed under reforms proposed on Wednesday by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Cameron has written to the leaders of the 15 other realms who share Queen Elizabeth as their monarch, including the Solomon Islands and the Grenadines, to request their approval, his office said.

    4. Royal wedding fever grips Himalayan nation
    5. Prince Harry arrives in US for military training

Cameron wants to banish laws dating back to 1688 and 1700 designed to ensure a Protestant monarchy and barring anyone in line to the throne from marrying a Roman Catholic unless they relinquished their claim to the crown.

Tiny kingdom of Bhutan prepares for royal wedding

Only a Catholic link is barred ? there are no restrictions on Jews, Hindus, Muslims or even atheists.

The rules have their roots in a turbulent period of English history dating back to Henry VIII's break with Rome that saw Catholics feared as a threat to the security of the state.

Slideshow: Fairytales do come true... (on this page)

"This rule is a historical anomaly," Cameron said in his letter. "It does not, for example, bar those who marry spouses of other faiths ? and we do not think it can continue to be justified."

The government also want the order of royal succession to be determined purely by age and not by sex. Until now, male heirs have taken precedence over female heirs, regardless of age.

The issue has been brought into focus by this year's wedding of Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, and Kate Middleton.

Royal weddings to commoners more common

Without a change to the rules, William and Kate's first son would eventually become king even if he had an older sister.

Ronnie Magro Wrestling Debut Upcoming!

Ronnie Magro, the stocky Jersey Shore star known for pummeling random drunk guys will have his shot in the ring sometime soon, and we?ve got the details. It seems like a match made in heaven. Take a guy known for screaming, ripping off his shirt, and threatening people, and you get him involved in an organized wrestling match. I mean, let?s be honest, he isn?t exactly the brightest crayon in the box, so you might as well find a good use for him. According to reports, Ronnie has been asked to appear on TNA Impact Wrestling, which is the same show that J-WOWW and Angelina were on in the past. This isn?t exactly like being asked on Monday Night Raw, but it will have to do for now. If you have been following the show, you know Ronnie has some anger issues. Even if you believe the story that people were really asking for it, it is still clear that he gets some kind of pleasure beating the crap out of people. I think he is a perfect fit for wrestling because of how he likes to throw things around the room. There have been a bunch of times where [...]

Hank Jr. writes song about 'Fox & Friends,' ESPN (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Hank Williams Jr. is about to have his say.

Williams' has cut a new song "I'll Keep My ...," calling out "Fox & Friends" and ESPN after an interview last week on the Fox News talk show led to the end of his association with the sports network and "Monday Night Football," long home to his "Are you ready for some football?" theme.

He's also scheduled to appear on "The View" and "Hannity" on Tuesday to discuss the uproar that sprung up after he made an analogy that President Barack Obama and House Speaker Rep. John Boehner golfing together was like Nazi leader Adolph Hitler and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu playing a round.

ESPN decided to pull Williams' intro from last Monday's "MNF" telecast after the comments and the move became permanent Thursday when both sides said they'd decided to pull the spot.

Williams wrote the topical third verse of "I'll Keep My ..." when he woke up Friday morning and he and a group of players laid it down in a Nashville studio by Friday afternoon. It could be on iTunes late Monday or early Tuesday.

In the song Williams, son of country music icon Hank Williams, says "Fox & Friends" hosts twisted his words: "So Fox `n Friends wanna put me down/Ask for my opinion/Twist it all around." He finishes the verse: "Well two can play that gotcha game you'll see."

Early in the song, he says the U.S. is "going down the drain" and says it's becoming "The United Socialist States of America." He mentions keeping "Fox & Friends" and ESPN out of your home toward the end of the song.

Williams' comments last Monday drew unlikely reactions with many commentators and comedians coming to his defense, claiming ESPN was infringing on his right to free speech. His defenders included the left-leaning Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar of "The View" and Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" and on the other side of the political landscape Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh.

The brouhaha prompted Williams also to start selling "Hank Jr. for President" T-shirts on his website.

Williams' theme song has been part of "MNF" since 1989. The song was a version of his hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" that he altered to match each week's game. He owns the song and all the rights to it, so ESPN will not be able to use it in any way.

Instead, the network says it will use an intro featuring Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders and soul singer Jimmy Scott prior to the Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions game Monday night. The introduction will change each week.

Bachmann: Debt ceiling fight kept her out of NH (AP)

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. ? Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said Sunday that her unsuccessful fight against raising the federal debt ceiling kept her away from New Hampshire for nearly four months, but she's still committed to winning over voters in the key early primary state.

Before starting a four-day bus trip Sunday, the Minnesota congresswoman had only campaigned in New Hampshire once since announcing her campaign in late June. Speaking to a small but enthusiastic group at a North Conway restaurant, she blamed the debt ceiling debate for her absence.

Bachmann last visited the state June 28. The vote on raising the debt ceiling happened Aug. 2.

"You didn't see me a lot here in New Hampshire and I'll tell you why: It's because my first duty was to go back to Washington, D.C.," she said.

The latest WMUR Granite State poll, released last week, put Bachmann's support among likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters at just 2 percent, down from 12 percent in early July. In the earlier poll, she was in second place behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who remains first in the latest poll as well.

Despite those numbers, Bachmann told reporters that she "absolutely" will compete in the primary.

"Of course we're going to be here," she said. "We had a wonderful relationship when we were here earlier this summer with the people of New Hampshire, and I'm coming back to remind people about my pro-growth message. I'm committed to the Live Free or Die state, to the principles of the Live Free or Die state."

Ray Shakir, 62, of North Conway, said he's deciding between Bachmann, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Atlanta businessman Herman Cain.

"I'm certainly enamored of how she speaks with enthusiasm," he said after quizzing Bachmann about what approach she'd use in nominating Supreme Court justices.

Shakir said he doesn't mind that Bachmann hasn't spent much time in New Hampshire because he "tries to look at it from a national perspective." But he doesn't think she has much hope of winning the primary.

"I think, unfortunately, Romney's got it sewn up," he said.

At a smaller outdoor gathering in Moultonborough later, New Hampshire Republican National Committeewoman Phyllis Woods asked Bachmann to weigh in on the scramble by states to set their primary and caucus dates. New Hampshire's secretary of state has yet to set a date, but the state is getting squeezed by other states that have moved up their contests.

New Hampshire typically follows Iowa's leadoff caucus by eight days. But with Iowa's date tentatively set for Jan. 3, and Nevada set to caucus Jan. 14, New Hampshire may leap into December.

Bachmann, describing her record of taking on tough challenges, said that would be fine with her.

"I'm up for it sooner rather than later, so if you all want (the primary) in December, I'm up for it in December," she said.

"All I know is, I want to be your Number 1. I want to be your sweetheart here in New Hampshire, so I'm going to be here competing and hopefully successfully for that spot. The states can do what they like. ... I will follow whatever law and whatever rule New Hampshire comes up with."
