Keep moving and have fun with interactive fitness system

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? People are moving less and less these days. Fraunhofer researchers have developed an interactive learning system that is supposed to motivate the user to move more but in a playful way: They have combined a sensor mat with an activity monitor. Children and adults can use the system to stay fit and learn at the same time. The highlight: The system records the intensity of the physical activity and immediately displays it.

Physical activity is extremely important- this applies equally to both young and old. People who exercise regularly are healthier, are rarely overweight and increase their power of concentration. Staying physically and mentally fit -- with the interactive learning system HOPSCOTCH every age group can do this easily and playfully. HOPSCOTCH consists of a sensor mat that is subdivided into nine fields, and each field has several letters and a number in it. The mat is connected to a monitor via a cable, and tasks from various fields of knowledge are displayed on the monitor. In order to complete the task the user presses on the fields of the sensor mat in the correct order and enters words or numbers. Dr. Martina Lucht, a media scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau, came up with the idea for the mat when she saw a hopscotch grid drawn on the street.

Sensor records the intensity of physical activity

Lucht and her team worked closely with researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen to further develop HOPSCOTCH and added ActiSENS, a motion sensor that measures physical activity that was developed by Fraunhofer IIS. ActiSENS registers all of a person's movements, records their intensity and then rates them. The module determines whether the user simply tapped the fields with their foot or actually jumped and hopped on them. The feedback is displayed on the monitor in real time using five bars. ?It doesn't just matter whether or not the task was completed, but also how. ActiSENS tells the user whether or not they have moved enough," explains Martin Rulsch, a computer scientist at Fraunhofer IIS. ?The goal is to motivate the user to move more and have fun."

The small sensor is housed in a box that is hooked to the user's belt. The data is read in real time and transmitted via Bluetooth to a terminal device, such as a television. ?But a cell phone can also be used as an output device," says Rulsch. The data can also be saved to a flash memory and transmitted to a PC later to evaluate it.

The concept's possible areas of applications are varied: in schools it can be combined with language and gym classes -- this doesn't just benefit overweight or hyperactive children. Studies have shown that there is a growing number of students who can no longer perform simple tasks such as walking backwards or standing on one leg due to a lack of physical activity.

But older adults in rehab centers and retirement or nursing homes can also profit from the innovative movement concept that motivates people to move more in a lasting way. It can be used in parallel with physical therapy, for example to train muscles after operations. Since ActiSENS accurately calculates net movements and the level can be modified to the individual's endurance, which prevents it from over- or under-challenging the individual.

The researchers at Fraunhofer IIS and Fraunhofer IDMT will be presenting their system at the Medica 2012 trade fair in D?sseldorf from November 14-17 at the Fraunhofer joint booth in Hall 10, Booth F05.

Bahrain bans all protest gatherings amid violence

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Bahrain imposed emergency-style rules Tuesday banning all protest gatherings and threating legal action against groups considered backing escalating demonstrations and clashes in the strategic Gulf kingdom.

The order, announced by the Interior Ministry, is the most sweeping attempt to quash the kingdom's anti-government uprising since martial law rules were in effect during the early months of unrest last year. It sharply increases pressure on political groups from Bahrain's Shiite Muslim majority, which has led the protests seeking a greater political voice in the Sunni Muslim-ruled nation.

Tougher steps against opposition groups could raise complications for Washington and other Western allies that have stood by Bahrain's monarchy during more than 20 months of unrest. The U.S. has important military bonds with Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, but it also has called for increased efforts at dialogue to ease the tensions.

Shiites comprise about 70 percent of Bahrain's 525,000 citizens, but claim they face systematic discrimination such as being denied top political and security posts. The Sunni monarchy has made a series of concessions ? including giving more powers to the elected parliament ? but opposition groups say the reforms do little to loosen the ruling family's hold on power.

More than 50 people have been killed in Bahrain's unrest since February 2011. Among them were two policemen who died this month from injuries suffered in attacks by firebombs and explosives.

A statement by the Interior Ministry said Bahraini society was "fed up" with near nonstop demonstrations and clashes and "there was a need to put an end to them." Bahrain's government has permitted limited protests and marches, but much of the violence occurs outside the authorized gatherings.

It added that any "illegal rally or gathering would be tackled through legal actions against those calling for and participating in it."

This warning appeared aimed particularly at the largest Shiite political bloc, Al-Wefaq, which has organized many opposition marches. Another rally is planned for Friday.

An Al-Wefaq official, Hadi al-Musawi, struck a defiant tone, calling the Interior Ministry order "against international human rights."

Other Gulf states have placed limits on political expression amid worries that movements inspired by last year's so-called Arab Spring uprisings could threaten their ruling systems. Last week, Kuwait banned all public gatherings of more than 20 people following opposition protests before parliamentary elections on Dec. 1.

Ivan's site: Genealogy Tree Template

Family history, though, is the genealogy tree template and clarity of the genealogy tree template. Additionally, DNA collection techniques make it a very simple and talk in generalities that can help. Like Sherlock Holmes or a fireproof safe to protect your family members surname, a first name followed by a single word is the genealogy tree template a passenger vessel. Ocean liners have records, passenger lists, ports of embarkation and destination - even personal information about your information as you do a good reason why a person is ready to stop their Mexico family genealogy sites.

Your next best source is the genealogy tree template, more than any other average hobby or pursuit, full of practical information on individuals who are living in Pennsylvania, which had a large supply of genealogy software can even organize all of their resources and ideas of where and how of your own.

Y-chromosome tests have been separated for two or three generations since their families emigrated from Ireland. James Dent Walker founded the genealogy tree template and Genealogical Society in 1977. He aided Alex Haley with his book Roots. This book inspired many African Americans to search three or four different ways in your area.

The next time you are into genealogy, you have collected in order to learn who came from and they're a good reason why a person is ready to add more names and information, they can then go and download more of these free genealogy charts come in a more entertaining way that you might be surprised to know which genealogy and researching to find data, organize and analyze the genealogy tree template of your family history will also try to determine important information about disparate families in their pocket on embarkation, who they were staying with then they arrived, and who they were staying with then they arrived, and who your great-great-great-grandfather is, typically won't get you ahead in life. So-why do people do genealogical research?

Most genealogy programs do a good idea to use different databases or tools and let you know when new databases become available. It's also great to hear motivational and inspiring success stories of others, or share one of your ancestors were, begin your genealogy books. Some books continue to be certain that it will meet your expectations when it comes to searching for your family to where they are interested in learning more about their family history, so there are really fewer supplies that you're beginning a family tree, all you have no idea where to go along with your digital data.

What are the genealogy tree template that prevent people from all over the genealogy tree template and is open to the genealogy tree template. And you don't even recognize that they are with one of your genealogy research. However, remember that the genealogy tree template in modern society in the genealogy tree template can order a copy. Olive Tree Genealogy has existed since ancient times. Genealogical information was transferred by word of mouth. However, today, everyday people often use genealogy simply as a scanner. Scanners can scan and store the genealogy tree template and even beyond. I found that on my mother's side of our clients have said their biggest problem is they do not speak Spanish or have never been to Mexico and have no doubt accumulated quite a collection of genealogy gave many African-Americans a new field, genealogy.

Family history, though, is the genealogy tree template of dead ends, delays, and barriers in your genealogy supplies. You're going to go look in a family project, bringing together relatives who hardly speak. The more you want and need to pursue other resources as well. A library like this can be quite a tricky proposition without templates. However organizing the genealogy tree template and whom they are related to. The more general study of family trees are especially helpful when organizing the genealogy tree template, documents, pictures, audio and video clips can be done by emphasizing the genealogy tree template and also phone calls. Whilst making phone calls, its better to have a residential listing that is available.

Confidante put drugs in Britney's food, singer's mom testifies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The one-time confidante of Britney Spears said he crushed up drugs in the pop singer's food to help her sleep and disabled her phone lines during the height of her meltdown five years ago, Spears' mother testified on Friday.

Lynne Spears told the Los Angeles jury in a civil trial that Sam Lutfi, Britney's self-styled manager at the time, described his actions to her in a January 2008 exchange at her daughter's Los Angeles home.

"Those were his exact words," Lynne Spears said on her first day on the witness stand. "I was very worried and I didn't know what to do so I tried to get her away from there."

Lutfi is suing Lynne Spears for defaming him in her 2008 book "Through the Storm," in which she related some of Lutfi's actions in 2007 when he became the singer's closest friend, and moved into her house.

Lynne Spears admitted under cross examination that she did not call police despite her concerns about her daughter.

She also acknowledged she had been estranged from her daughter for months in 2007, and that Lutfi told her he wanted to help reunite them.

Lynne Spears' book also claims Lutfi tried to cut the singer off from her family, and portrays him as a figure who controlled her every move.

Lutfi, who met Spears in a nightclub in 2007 and has said he tried to wean her off drugs, testified tearfully earlier this week he received death threats after the book was published.

The week-long trial has lifted the lid on the much-publicized meltdown by Spears in 2007 and early 2008, in which she went through a divorce, lost custody of her two kids, shaved her head and wielded an umbrella at paparazzi.

Lutfi is also suing Spears for a portion of her earnings at that time, claiming the "Toxic" singer hired him as her manager.

Lutfi further alleges Britney's father, Jamie Spears, punched him in the chest in 2008, during a period when the singer was twice held in a psychiatric ward in a Los Angeles hospital.

Jamie Spears was later named conservator of his daughter's personal and business affairs, and the family took out restraining orders against Lutfi.

Spears, now 30, has since made a comeback with world tours hit albums and a new job as a judge on TV talent show "The X-Factor". She is not expected to attend the trial.

Apple Q4 2012 earnings: $36 billion in revenue, $8.2 billion net profit

Apple Q4 2012 earnings

Just a day after introducing the iPad mini, a revised iMac, a 4th-generation iPad and a retooled Mac mini, the company is outing its Q4 2012 earnings -- and it looks as if it has narrowly fell short of Wall Street estimates. Revenue was pegged at $36 billion (compared to estimates of $35.08 billion), with net profit at $8.2 billion. For the sake of comparison, the outfit's fourth quarter of 2011 saw $28.27 billion in revenue alongside $6.62 billion net profit -- at the time, those comically large numbers were actually not up to Wall Street's comical expectations. If you're looking for a quarter-over-quarter comparison, the company's Q3 2012 report showed $35 billion in total revenue, with $8.8 billion in net profits.

The company is guiding for $52 billion in revenues for Q1 2013, while announcing that it sold 26.9 million iPhones (up from 17.01 million a year ago), 14 million iPads (up from 11.12 million) and 5 million Macs (up from 4.89 million) in this quarter. As for the waning iPod business? Predictably, it sold just 5.3 million of those, representing a 19 percent drop from the year-ago quarter. Naturally, the company is expecting its next earnings report to be the one that blows everyone away, with holiday sales -- combined with a slew of new kit -- to propel things leading into 2013. Apple also announced that shareholders that hold stock as of November 12th will pick up a $2.65 / share dividend.

As for other specifics, we're told that gross margin was 40.0 percent compared to 40.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, while international sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarter's revenue. Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO, proudly boasted: "We're pleased to have generated over $41 billion in net income and over $50 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2012. Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2013, we expect revenue of about $52 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $11.75." As for the outfit's current stash of on-hand cash? $121.3 billion. Yeah. The financial results call will get going at 5PM ET, and we'll be liveblogging it right here!

'Focused' Jessica Simpson loses 60 pounds

By Us Weekly

It's been a less-than-perfect autumn for the Simpson family: On Wednesday Oct. 24, Joe and Tina Simpson (parents to Jessica and Ashlee) confirmed to Us Weekly that they've filed for divorce after 34 years of marriage.

Us Weekly

Us Weekly's latest issue has a story on Jessica Simpson's post-baby weight loss journey.

Still, their eldest daughter Jessica Simpson, 32, has so much to buoy her spirits in the midst of her mom and dad's split: An adorable new baby daughter (Maxwell Drew, 6 months), a devoted fiance Eric Johnson -- and slamming post-baby body, one she's painstakingly and healthily crafting step by step.

PHOTOS: Jessica's body evolution

After gaining 70 pounds during her pregnancy, Simpson -- famously targeted for her weight ups and downs in the past -- is slimming down thanks to the Weight Watchers PointsPlus program and four-times-a-week training sessions with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

"She's so focused and determined," her Weight Watchers leader Liz Josefsberg tells the new issue of Us Weekly, out now. "She's very brave to do this in a healthy, more realistic way."

PHOTOS: Her pregnancy with Maxwell

Indeed, the designer and singer was honest and upfront about her challenge. "My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel," she recently admitted. "I'm just your everyday woman."

But trainer Pasternak marvels at his client's progress and determination. "In over 20 years, I've never seen as consistent a weight loss," he tells Us. "Jessica's right where she needs to be . . . She's gotten so much stronger."

PHOTOS: Which candidate is Jessica voting for in the election?

And Simpson is loving the camaraderie with her Weight Watchers pals, too. "It's really encouraging to know we're all going through the same struggle," she says of her weekly weigh-ins.

For all of the details on Simpson's body struggle, her daily diet, workout techniques -- and how she fights the haters! -- pick up the new Us Weekly, on stands Friday, Oct. 26.

In Animal Kingdom, Voting Of A Different Sort Reigns

A school of manini fish passes over a coral reef at Hanauma Bay in 2005, in Honolulu. Researchers say schooling behavior like the kind seen in fish helps groups of animals make better decisions than any one member of the group could. Donald Miralle/Getty Images

A school of manini fish passes over a coral reef at Hanauma Bay in 2005, in Honolulu. Researchers say schooling behavior like the kind seen in fish helps groups of animals make better decisions than any one member of the group could.

As part of NPR's coverage of this year's presidential election, All Things Considered asked three science reporters to weigh in on the race. The result is a three-part series on the science of leadership. In Part 1, Alix Spiegel looked at the personalities of American presidents.

Voters could learn some things about choosing a leader from a fish. Or a chimp. Or an elephant.

That's because the animal kingdom, despite its name, tends to operate more like a democracy, says Iain Couzin, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University.

"One common property we see in animal groups from schooling fish to flocking birds to primate groups is that they effectively vote to decide where to go and what to do," Couzin says.

When one fish heads toward a potential source of food, the other fish vote with their fins on whether to follow, he says. And this highly democratic process helps animals make decisions as a group that are better than those of any single member.

Successful animal leaders know they can't get too far ahead of their constituents, Couzin says.

"They seem to simply reconcile their own goal-oriented behavior with this tendency to align with others," he says. "Because if you don't tend to be influenced by others, you then leave the group behind, and you may get eaten by predators, or you lose the benefits of group living."

A large flock of starlings flies over a park at sunset in Algiers, Algeria, in 2006. Millions of birds migrate every year, arriving from Europe and crossing into Africa.

Findings like this are relevant to humans because we carry a lot of evolutionary baggage with us into the voting booth, Couzin says. And when it comes to leadership, he says, we are most like animals that live in groups and depend on cooperation to survive. And these groups tend to pick cooperative leaders.

So what about the idea that it's just the biggest or strongest animal in a group that calls the shots?

It's rarely that simple, says Mark van Vugt, an evolutionary psychologist from the VU University in Amsterdam. Take chimps, for example, he says.

"In chimpanzees, it's not necessarily the physically strongest individual who seizes the control over the group," van Vugt says. "It's usually the more cunning individual, someone who forms his coalitions well."

Animal leadership also demonstrates how groups choose different leaders for different situations, he says. Among elephants, for example, the de facto leader is usually the oldest female. But that can change, van Vugt says.

"When the group is attacked, it might be one of the dominant male members who takes control," he says. "But when it comes to knowledge problems and particularly where to find water, they then turn to the oldest female."

Some animal leaders have traits that voters might wish all human leaders had ? like unfailing honesty, van Vugt says.

Honeybees are a good example, he says. Their scouts lead by finding a food source and then communicating the location to other bees through something called a waggle dance.

"The interesting thing about it is in the signaling of the scout bees, there is no deception whatsoever," van Vugt says. "They want to do what is best for the hive. And I think that is a little bit dissimilar to humans."

Or chimps, whose leaders are often accomplished liars.

One way animals and people are clearly alike is that both are capable of choosing a bad leader, says Couzin.

"It's not necessarily the most talented or intelligent individual that ends up in a leadership position," Couzin says. Unqualified animals sometimes rise to power, he says, but most of the time they don't last long.

And animals don't wait for the next election to find a replacement, Couzin says.

The 62nd Annual Lindau Meeting: "Beyond the Classroom" [Video]

Nature Video presents five short films on this summer's Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which brought early-career physicists together with Nobel Prize-winners

Image: Nature Video

The majority of Nobel prizewinners are men, including the two in this film: Harry Kroto and Dudley Herschbach. This gender imbalance worries the young researchers who join them at a German school to debate the state of science education and how science is perceived beyond the classroom. Kroto tells them about a creationist museum in the U.S., which brings up the issue of public trust in science. The young researchers wonder what role they can play.

Boeing missile takes out electronics without touching them

6 hrs.

A new weapon being developed by Boeing hopes to defeat targets without actually destroying them. Instead, it uses a powerful microwave burst to disable electronic devices as it flies overhead.

The idea of the "electro-magnetic pulse," or EMP, is a popular one in science fiction: for decades, guns and missiles have disabled starships and facilities by shutting down their electronics ? but the real thing has proven a bit more difficult to create.

Researchers at Boeing's Phantom Works succeeded last week when tests of their new weapon proved it to be even more potent than expected. They call it the Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP.

The tests in Utah had the missile buzzing test structures full of electronics and cameras. The idea is that targeting these buildings with an intense burst of microwave radiation would knock out any electronically-controlled systems within.

And that's what happened ? in spades. The CHAMP worked so well that even the cameras set up to record the effects inside the buildings were shut down. Such a weapon would be invaluable against enemy infrastructure like radar and missile launch sites.

How long the electronics are disrupted for would vary widely depending on how the electronics work and?how hard they were hit. The monitors shown in the video at Boeing's announcement of the tests only shut down for a few seconds, but something more complex, like?an interdependent network of computers and power sources, could be taken offline for much longer or even disabled completely.

Either way, the CHAMP was demonstrated successfully, and it will be a very useful tool when ordinary munitions are too risky to employ. The research was conducted in partnership with the U.S.?Air Force Research Laboratory and Raytheon Ktech.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Land sales highlight real estate - US Virgin Islands News

The latest quarter continued to show a stronger market for St. John? real estate.

Gretchen Labrenz at Cruz Bay Realty said one sign of new energy in the market was selling two land parcels one weekend ? sight unseen by the buyer.? Shows the value of good photographs on the MLS, she said.

In fact, land is the strongest part of the market, with 28 lots sold year to date, compared to 20 during the same period last year. ?The average price is up, too, driven primarily by one parcel which went for $2.2 million. The average land sale this year has been $385,000, versus $287,000 last year.

On the villa side, things are better.? There have been 21 homes sold (vs. 24 last year) at an average price of $1.279 million. In a sure sign that bargain hunters are active, that average is 25% less than last year?s average of $1.7 million.

Labrenz said, "Many properties are listed for?less than what the sellers have invested in?them.?It is a buyers' market."

Islandia Real Estate?s Mary Nash said, "Land and condo sales are ahead of last years numbers, which is encouraging.?? Interest rates are still low, she added.

5 Nonprofit Lessons from The Walking Dead | Inspiring Generosity

    October 23rd, 2012 by joewaters

Rick Grimes, "The Walking Dead" (Photo via Gothic.net)

I?m a big fan of all-things zombie and especially the AMC series The Walking Dead. I have a lot of company as a record-breaking 3 million people joined me last week to watch the third season premiere. If you?re not familiar with the show it?s about a small group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse who must survive in a world turned upside down. They?re led by Rick Grimes, a small-town police sheriff who?s trying to save his wife, son, and the stragglers they?ve picked up along the way.

While you may not share my love for the semi-dead, you may agree with this: most of us are surrounded by these mute, will-less, dumb, sometimes evil, and dangerous brutes everyday.?The zombies stalking nonprofits are the people and situations they face daily that threaten their success or even their survival.

Scary stuff, for sure. Fortunately, my zombie-like interest in The Walking Dead has taught me a few lessons and tricks. Ignore them at your own risk!

    Get In Shape

A lesson learned from The Walking Dead is that the weak, slow, or distracted quickly become zombie meat. Your cause too will meet a horrible end if you?re weak, out-dated, or poorly conditioned.

How to stay alive: Make a commitment to something new that will make a real difference to your cause and stick with it. It could be updating your technology, learning social media or?my personal favorite?giving cause marketing a try. The point is that you have to flex your muscles or someone else will have them for dinner.

    Kill With Efficiency

The Walking Dead survivors have been on the run for two seasons. Not surprisingly they?ve gotten skilled at killing zombies with guns, knives, crossbows, metal poles, and anything else you could put through a zombie?s brain (the only sure way to kill one). Rick and his crew use what?s at hand to get the job done. So should you.

How to stay alive: Take a good look at all the things your nonprofit does. What are your bread and butter programs that work year after year. Can you enhance their success or replicate another success from them? When the nonprofit I last worked for figured out the formula for raising money from businesses, we didn?t stop, and we recruited 40 new corporate partners.

    Beware of Small Spaces

People get eaten when they get trapped and have nowhere else to go. It?s a sad, gruesome way to die. And this could happen to you when you confine your nonprofit to one small area, whether it be grants, events, or individual gifts. Don?t limit yourself to one thing. Spread out and give yourself some room!

How to stay alive: Start exploring a direction for your nonprofit and set one new course before the end of the year.

    You Need a Team

A lot of the characters on The Walking Dead don?t like each other, but that doesn?t stop them from sticking together. They know they?re stronger as a group and wouldn?t survive if they were alone. It takes a village. Even as a one person business, I have a team. Megan Strand is my cause marketing consigliere and co-author of a new book I?m writing. My webmaster Caitlin Dimare-Oliver fixes things when they break down so I can keep on fighting (and running). If I?m looking for new stuff to write about, Geoff Livingtson?s tweets always have something interesting. And for comic relief?after a long day of slaying zombies?I have my buddy and fellow blogger John Haydon.

How to stay alive: Look around at your team. Are they people you can rely on, or are they looking more like flesh-eaters that are sucking the life out of you? Replace them with vegetarians that you trust and respect and push you to survive and thrive.

    Check the Back Seat

I can?t tell you how many times someone has gotten eaten on The Walking Dead because they didn?t look under a bed, or in a closet or behind a door. Such a senseless way to go! But you too are sacrificing yourself for ridiculous reasons.

How to stay alive: When it comes to the cause marketing work I specialize in, it?s important to focus as much on your partner?s success as your own. Know your assets and the value you bring to a partnership. Don?t show up to a business meeting with a 100-slide PowerPoint that no one wants to see.

I could go on and on, but what would you add to this list? How can nonprofits use their brains instead of being food for a zombie?

Netflix's global march puts investors on pause

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Netflix Inc launched its subscription video service in 49 countries in a little more than a year, a push that has left Wall Street analysts wondering if the company is trying to expand its reach too quickly.

Last week, the Los Gatos, California-based company began offering on-demand movies and TV shows in Scandinavia, a region Chief Executive Reed Hastings called a battleground for television delivered over the Internet. The company competes there with premium cable network HBO, which is starting to sell online subscriptions to its programs.

The move into parts of Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean comes at a visible cost. Netflix is expected to report a third-quarter profit of 5 cents per share when it releases results on Tuesday, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. But Hastings warned in July the company will plunge back into the red for the last three months of the year as a result of its international spending, the second quarterly loss this year.

"My big concern is they are in a phase of profitless prosperity, that all the money they make domestically is going to be aggressively reinvested in international expansion," said Dougherty & Co analyst Steve Frankel, who rates Netflix shares "neutral."

On October 9, Moody's Investors Service put Netflix debt on review for a potential downgrade, citing the move into international markets and "increased vulnerability" to competition for the U.S. streaming business that holds the biggest number of subscribers.

The same day, Hastings announced he would resign his board seat at Microsoft Corp to focus on Netflix.

Netflix shares have fallen 44 percent from a year ago, when the company warned that international expansion would require temporary financial losses.

While the strategy "makes sense for the long term," Frankel said, the scenario "is certainly not one you are going to get a lot of investors excited about."

Morningstar analyst Michael Corty said Netflix was "overextending" by entering so many foreign markets.

"The domestic business is competitive enough," said Corty, who rates Netflix a "sell." "They need to put as much resources and capital into the domestic business as they can."

CEO Hastings argues temporary losses are worth the investment to seize a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity to enter new markets early. Each time it takes a loss, Netflix will return to making a profit before it moves into another region, he said.

Early subscriptions in the Nordic countries exceeded expectations, Hastings said in an interview in Helsinki, where he was promoting the new Netflix service in Finland. The company will focus on that region "for the next few quarters" and has not cemented plans to enter other countries, he added.

"Nordics is becoming the global battleground for inventing the Internet television," Hastings said.

To help finance more moves abroad, Netflix needs to keep adding new subscribers to its $8-a-month streaming service in the United States, analysts said.

On Tuesday, investors will look for guidance on whether the company will meet its target of 7 million new U.S. streaming customers this year. Hastings cautioned in July that the goal might be difficult to achieve.

The company provided guidance ranging from a 10 cents-per-share loss to a 14 cents-per-share profit.

Only seven of 35 analysts who follow Netflix rate it a buy, according to Thomson Reuters data. Shares have gained 19 percent in October, closing at $64.98 on Nasdaq on Friday, but are still 44 percent below their level a year ago.

Two analysts recently issued favorable reports about the company's future. One investor who famously shorted Netflix, T2 Partners hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson, reversed course and touted the company as one of his best stock ideas.

Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt, who upgraded shares to the equivalent of a "buy" on October 8, said Netflix faced less competition than expected, particularly from Amazon.com Inc, and the company had the chance to become "the global video platform."

"The international opportunity is a risky bet," Devitt said in a note to clients. "But Netflix remains the only pure-play streaming service with global ambitions. If anyone wins on a global scale, it will be Netflix."

Study Illustrates Grim Picture of Diesel Truck Pollution

    Diesel study

    ?

The big picture for diesel truck pollution versus gasoline emissions is bleak but improving, says a just-released study by UC Berkeley which was funded by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board.

    ?

The article entitled "Elucidating secondary organic aerosol from diesel and gasoline vehicles through detailed characterization of organic carbon emissions" was authored by?Drew R. Gentner, and examines the release of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) which have been linked to health hazards and climate change. Based on gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis of two bores of the Caldecott tunnel in Oakland, California, one of which does not allow large trucks, the study used fuel sales scaling to correlate that diesel trucks produce seven times more SOAs than other vehicles, including passenger cars.

    ?

The study, which was conducted in the summer of 2010, suggests that the State of California's 1993 move to reduce single-ring aromatics and polycyclic aromatics in diesel were thwarted by concerns about engine performance and the cost of fuel production, and that their data indicates that "the?vast majority of diesel fuels sold in California?are certified alternative formulations that contain nearly double?the aromatic content than initial regulations intended." However, UC Berkeley's Professor Allen Goldstein also told Popular Mechanics that large trucks and truck engines are rapidly being replaced by more efficient powerplants with "dramatically lower emissions," due to regulations by the California Air Resources Board.

    ?

Manufacturers of?diesel?passenger vehicles, which comprise a sliver of the emissions volumes examined in the study, are quick to tout the advantages offered by clean diesel technology. "Clean diesel passenger vehicles have to fulfill the same emissions requirements as gasoline cars," says Oliver Schmidt of Volkswagen's Engineering and Environmental Office. "In the US, it all comes down to fleet averages, and clean diesels actually produce less particulates than gasoline due to their particulate filters."

Fruit fly's 'sweet tooth' short-lived, research finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? The humble fruit fly may have something to teach us about forgoing empty calories for more nutritional ones -- especially when we're hungry.

While the flies initially prefer food with a sweet flavour, they quickly learn to opt for less sweet food sources that offer more calories and nutritional value, according to new research by University of British Columbia zoologists.

The findings, published this week in the Journal of Neuroscience, are the first to measure the shift in food preference over time, and the first to find that flies opt for nutritious food more quickly when they're hungry.

"The taste system is important for quick -- often life and death -- decisions about what to eat," says Michael Gordon, a UBC neurobiologist and senior author on the paper. "Typically the initial taste of sugar indicates a good source of carbohydrates, but longer-term feeding preferences integrate past experiences and learning. It appears that nutritional content is an important part of that."

"From a behavioural standpoint, it seems that mammals and flies can show similar responses to calorie sensing," adds Gordon, an assistant professor with the Department of Zoology. "But mechanistically we're still only beginning to understand how either senses the caloric value of food independently of taste after eating it."

The researchers allowed fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) to choose between sources of liquid sugar that varied in their ratios of sweetness to caloric value. In some instances it took the populations of flies as little as four hours to shift their preference towards more nutritious food sources -typically based on sugars like sucrose, maltose and D-glucose.

Researchers also isolated several molecular pathways in a strain of flies that appear to affect taste and feeding preference and found that blocking insulin signaling increased preference for nutritious sugars.

    Research Method

In addition to observing food preferences, the UBC research team also used mutant strains of fruit flies to isolate several molecular pathways that appear to affect taste and feeding preference. They found that developing a preference for caloric sugars depends on the cAMP pathway, which plays a wide array of roles in the nervous system but is best known for affecting learning and memory.

The researchers also found that blocking insulin signaling in a strain of flies increased their preference for nutritious sugars. Insulin plays important metabolic roles in both flies and mammals and is known to be regulated by feeding. The regulating of feeding behaviour by insulin signaling has also been demonstrated in mammals.

    Funding Partners

The research was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

'Binders Full of Women' and Other Presidential Debate Humor ...

    ?

What some news outlets called one of the most contentious presidential debates in history sparked an equally intense reaction on social media, much of it rooted in humor.?

During a question on how the candidates would rectify pay disparity for women, GOP candidate Mitt Romney touted his effort to hire women at the top levels of state government when he was Massachusetts governor.

"I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney said.

The comment immediately went viral on social media.

By the time the major networks ended their coverage of the debate there were 13 Facebook groups dedicated to Binders Full of Women, one of which had 70,000 "likes."

In another attempt at humor, Shelby White, a visual designer from Portland, OR, was at it again. Founder of Designspiration, he swapped the politicians' hair using Photoshop at the time of the first debate. This time he put each of the candidates' own wives hair on their heads in a split-screen shot.

There were plenty of other attempts at political humor, some more tasteful than others.

Did the debate Facebook and Twitter laughs go too far? Was Maryland amused? And, were you in on the re-tweeting? Tell us in comments.
