Israeli PM Netanyahu?s Bed Reportedly Cost the Public HOW Much?

Israeli PM Netanyahu Under Fire for $127,000 Bed on Flight to EnglandBibi Netanyahu

JERUSALEM (TheBlaze/AP) -- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be seeking alternate sleeping arrangements when traveling after receiving a sky-high bill for installing a customized bed on a recent flight to London, officials close to the Israeli leader said.

Netanyahu found himself facing a public uproar on Sunday after Channel 10 TV reported over the weekend that he had spent a whopping $127,000 in public funds on a special sleeping cabin for the five-hour flight to attend Margaret Thatcher's funeral last month.

Netanyahu's office initially defended the decision, saying the prime minister had a busy schedule ahead of the flight and needed to be fresh for important meetings in Britain.

But following public criticism, officials close to Netanyahu said late Saturday that he had actually been unaware of the cost, and once informed, he ordered the bed be canceled on all future flights. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

According to the Times of Israel, the flight would have been roughly $300,000, but the cost of installing the bed brought the total up to $427,000.

The uproar comes at a delicate time in Israel. Netanyahu's government is in the process of drawing up a budget expected to include painful austerity measures and tax increases due to a widening deficit.

On Saturday night, thousands took to the streets in Tel Aviv and other cities to protest the expected budget cuts. Netanyahu was meeting Sunday with top officials to discuss likely cutbacks in the defense budget.

Micky Rosenthal of the opposition Labor Party called for an inquiry into the prime minister's "scandalous behavior" according to the Maariv daily on Sunday.

"We thought that nothing could surprise us anymore when it came to the Netanyahus' personal behavior. Well, we thought wrong," wrote Sima Kadmon, a political commentator in the Yediot Ahronot daily.

"It is unbelievable that not a single person in the prime minister's inner circle saw how reprehensible this was. Not a single person showed a tiny bit of common sense. There was no one who anticipated just how angry people would be when they learned about this," Kadmon said about the custom-made bed.

Earlier this year, Netanyahu stopped buying ice cream from his favorite Jerusalem parlor after an Israeli newspaper discovered his office was spending $2,700 a year for the frozen treat.

(AP) ? The lead singer of heavy metal band As I Lay Dying, who is charged with plotting to kill his estranged wife, had recently become obsessed with bodybuilding and had started acting dangerously distracted around his children, his wife said in divorce papers.

Tim Lambesis was charged late Wednesday with one felony count of solicitation of murder, San Diego County district attorney spokeswoman Tanya Sierra said. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.

Lambesis' estranged wife, Meggan Lambesis, said in the court papers obtained by The Associated Press that her husband had fallen asleep while caring for the couple's three children near a pool and had begun spending endless hours at a gym. He had also begun to spend thousands of dollars on tattoos, she said in the papers filed last fall.

Meggan Lambesis didn't express any concern in the documents for her own safety, however.

Police say her husband tried to hire a hitman to kill her, but the person he approached was actually an undercover detective taking part in a sting operation set up following a tip to law enforcement last week.

The 32-year-old frontman of the Grammy-nominated band was taken into custody Tuesday at a store in Oceanside.

The musician's wife also said in court papers that Lambesis toured six months a year and had taken two last-minute trips in a month to see his then-girlfriend in Florida.

She said he owned two "high-end" Harley Davidson motorcycles, dined out for almost every meal and lived in a spacious suite at his parents' $2 million home.

She asked the court to order an expert to examine their music-related businesses and other assets. She submitted a tax return showing the couple grossed $233,000 in 2010 but did not specify an amount she was seeking for spousal support.

The couple adopted the children ? ages 4, 8 and 10 ? from Ethiopia, and Tim Lambesis continued to see them for about 10 hours a week when he was not on tour, even though the couple was no longer living together, according to court documents.

Meggan Lambesis said in the court papers that he would ignore the children while texting or talking on the phone. The stay-at-home mom said the children need a stable parent to help them adjust to their new life.

She said they would try private mediation to work out the children's custody and visitation issues.

Tim Lambesis' comments about his Grammy-nominated band's latest album, "Awakened," indicate he may have been struggling. The singer, who has a degree in religious studies, is known for his growled vocals and philosophical lyrics, which he has said are written from his perspective as a Christian.

The band's website says the album ? released the same month his wife filed for divorce after eight years of marriage ? is a "far darker, more pessimistic beast" than previous albums.

"On this record, I wasn't purposefully trying to be negative, but I think sometimes we have to be honest with some of the darker and more difficult times of our lives to get back to that positivity," Lambesis is quoted as saying.

A man who answered the phone at a number listed in the singer's name in Del Mar said the family was not commenting at this time, and Lambesis' attorney could not be reached for comment.

As I Lay Dying formed in San Diego in 2000 and has released six albums, including 2007's "An Ocean Between Us," which reached No. 8 on Billboard's charts. A single from the album, "Nothing Left," was nominated for a Grammy for top metal performance.

The band, which plays in an aggressive style that features metal guitar riffs at the furious pace of hardcore punk, was scheduled to tour the country this summer.

Its record label, Metal Blade, said in a message posted to the band's fans that there are many unanswered questions.

"We'll keep you informed as best we can," the message said. "Our thoughts right now are with Tim, his family, and with everyone else affected by this terrible situation."

Comcast reportedly axing Skype on Xfinity from June 1st

Well, Comcast's idea to charge users $10 a month for set-top Skype hardware went as well as you could have expected. If DSLReports' sources are correct, the offering will be quietly retired on June 1st due to, surprise surprise, "low adoption." If you were one of the few triple-play customers who ponied up for the gear, fear not, as the leaked internal e-mail says that existing users will continue to be supported. Given that you can snag subscription-free gear from Logitech, Biscotti and others, it's no surprise to see Skype on Xfinity joining Cisco's Umi on the island of misfit telepresence devices.

Lil Wayne.

There's a reason Weezy feels woozy sometimes.

In an interview on Wednesday's episode of MTV's RapFix Live, Lil Wayne opened up about his ongoing battle with epilepsy, which he said causes recurring seizures that can strike unprovoked and at any time.

"No warning, no nothing, I don't feel sick. I get headaches real bad. And the headaches? I didn't get no headaches or nothing," the rapper told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway.

According to Lil Wayne, he has no memory of the seizures when they happen, either, and is usually told about them afterward by family and friends.

"I told them the other day, 'Y'all can tell me right now that y'all was lying, like, 'You know what? We lyin' ain't nothin,' and I'd have to believe them because I don't know," admitted the MC. "I go to sleep and wake up in the hospital. I don't feel anything. I just hope it stops happening."

The 30-year-old Wayne (real name: Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) has experienced several scary episodes over the last few months, prompting concerns about his health.

The hitmaker was hospitalized in the ICU of Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for six days following multiple seizures. He subsequently recovered only to be felled by another seizure on April 30 that landed him in the hospital again.

On both occasions, Lil Wayne took to Twitter to let fans know that he was OK and thank them for their prayers. He also told L.A.'s Power 106 in March that he's an epileptic and prone to seizures, but "y'all just never hear about it."

Either way, the TMCMB artist isn't letting the ailment slow him down any. Yesterday, he was in Miami to celebrate the release of his new shoe line, Spectre by SUPRA, and noted his doctor is cool with his activities.

Idolator & Gap Styld.by: Skylar Grey | Music News, Reviews, and ...

In case you missed our announcement yesterday, Idolator and Gap are throwing a Styld.by summer celebration at Los Angeles? shopping mecca The Grove this evening (May 9), and you?re invited. Singer-songwriter/all around hit-maker Skylar Grey will be at the shindig to perform songs from her upcoming Kidinakorner/Interscope debut LP Don?t Look Down, ahead of the album?s July 9 release date.

You know Grey?s name from her songwriting contributions in recent years, not the least of which include Eminem and Rihanna?s ?Love The Way You Lie,?? Dr. Dre?s ?I Need A Doctor? and Cee Lo Green?s current single ?Only You.? (By the way, ever listened to Skylar?s own, haunting version of ?Love The Way You Lie??) She recently paired up with Em once again for her playful and poppy early 2013 single??C?mon Let Me Ride,? before offering up the much more dark ?Final Warning? last month.

Like current chart sensations Imagine Dragons, Skylar was signed by British producer Alex Da Kid, who raved to Idolator about Grey in 2010: ?To me she?s an amazing artist. She plays like nine or ten instruments. She writes amazing songs. She?s the real deal.?

Upbeat pop, introspective ballads, hip hop-influenced tracks ? yes, Skylar?s upcoming album Don?t Look Down should prove to be quite a flavorful mix of sounds. ?It was really hard for me to settle on one genre,? the singer told us last month. ?It?s actually impossible for me to do that? I feel like I?ve landed on something for this album that I?m really proud of.?

Music aside, you can get a feel for Skylar?s summer fashion sense via the Gap threads she?s wearing above ? a combo of ?sexy boyfriend shorts? and a striped sweater.

Don?t forget to RSVP for tonight?s in-store performance by Grey at the Grove Gap in Los Angeles.

Jaren Michael Kuester Charged With 3 Homicides In Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE ? A man accused of killing three people in a Wisconsin farmhouse last month told investigators he broke into their house for warmth and then struck each of them with a fireplace poker as they returned home, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Jaren Michael Kuester, 31, was charged with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide, as well as single counts of burglary and driving a vehicle without the owner's consent.

He's accused of killing 70-year-old Gary Thoreson; his 66-year-old wife, Chloe Thoreson; and his 76-year-old brother, Dean Thoreson, on April 27 in a home in the Town of Wiota, a community of about 1,000 people about 60 miles southwest of Madison.

Kuester's public defender, Guy Taylor, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Tuesday. Kuester is due in court for an initial appearance Friday.

The criminal complaint doesn't say specifically how or when authorities linked Kuester to the killings. However, it notes that the day after the slayings, police tracked him down at a Waukesha residence where the Thoresons' pickup truck was parked outside. The complaint says an officer saw what appeared to be dried blood on Kuester's feet and left hand.

His April 28 arrest in the killings came just three days after he was taken into custody for allegedly threatening staff members at a Waukesha County animal shelter and later bailed out of jail. A shelter employee said Kuester demanded that the dead dog he'd dropped off a few weeks earlier be returned to him alive, and when shelter officials couldn't comply he told staffers they would pay for the dog with their lives.

The brief jail stint and other challenges in his life made him feel things were "crashing and burning around him," the criminal complaint said. So he got in his vehicle and started driving, eventually abandoning the car three counties away and stripping his clothes off because he thought he was being followed, the complaint said.

Kuester's unoccupied SUV was found in Green County a day after the shelter incident arrest. His jail ID tag and a pair of shoes were discovered about 200 yards from the vehicle, and other items including shirts, jeans, socks, underwear and a watch were discarded along a half-mile track.

Kuester ran through the woods and arrived at the Thoreson home about sunset. He broke in through a window because he was cold and didn't think anyone was home, court documents said.

He found clothes and food and then searched the house for valuables, prosecutors said. Then he fell asleep on a bedroom floor.

Kuester told investigators he heard a man enter the house and walk up the stairs. Fearing the man would see him and go for help, Kuester hit him with a fireplace poker and killed him, the criminal complaint said.

Prosecutors said a man and woman entered the house later and Kuester didn't want them to leave and get help so he struck them with the fireplace poker, too. The woman was also stabbed.

Kuester grabbed money, blankets and clothes and threw them in the Thoresons' pickup, court documents said. He then drove to his father's house.

Kuester's father, James Kuester, told investigators his son was being treated for mental health issues and taking various medications. He said his son visited his apartment the day after the Thoresons' bodies were found in an apparently confused state and told him he had hurt three people.

From actual query letters?

?I?ve got a novel that?s sort of a historical fantasy magical realism.?

GregsBooks? My new nonfiction is for everyone. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone. There?s nothing as good or like it on the market. It should be stocked at the front of the store in the ?bestseller? section.?

?The graduation gift book I?m proposing will be the kind of book retail will stock all year around.?

One thing new (and sometimes veteran) authors don?t understand is that every book must have a recognizable category. The queries for books listed above have none. The moment you go outside of a known category, retail doesn?t know what to do with it. They don?t know where to stock it; they don?t know how to describe it to their customers. In short, they won?t know how to sell it. And that?s the point of writing books you?d like people to read . . . to sell them.

It starts with what is known as a BISAC code. It?s those few words on the back of the book that give retail and consumer a clue as to what the book is about. Every book gets a maximum of three. Here are the categories from the Book Industry Study Group:

Handy dandy, but did you notice there are only TWO categories for fiction: Fiction and Juvenile fiction.

When you toddle over to Barnes and Noble, here are the categories you?ll find as you browse the aisles:

Not bad. A little bit more descriptive in fiction, which is helpful, but if you wanted to find ?historical fiction,? for example, you have to browse a few thousand books and hope you bump into a title that screams ?historical? from the spine.

How about at a Christian bookstore? At a local Mardel, here is what we found:

Again, ONE designation for fiction. (Really? Do they really NOT want to sell novels?)

And then there are award categories. Here are the categories for the ?Christy Awards,? the yearly fiction awards:

Contemporary Romance
Contemporary Series (sequels and novella)
Contemporary Stand Alones
First Novel
Historical
Historical Romance
Suspense

Young Adult

The American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) has their own set of categories for determining the ?Carol Awards?:

The INSPYs (Bloggers Awards of Excellence in Faith-Driven Literature) has yet another set of categories:

General Fiction
Speculative Fiction
Mystery & Thriller

The ECPA has their Gold Medallion Awards in these categories:

Book of the Year

Non-fiction

If all of this seems confusing, well, I suppose it is. When in doubt take comfort that you don?t have to pick from the Amazon.com categories. Just try to find three categories to mention!

The point is, each book gets three known categories on the back. Choose wisely in your proposals, but also try to choose broad categories so your book will get the most amount of exposure. And please, for the love Ernest Hemingway, don?t make up a category and call yourself a ?pioneer.? Don?t implore the agent to think ?outside the box.? Don?t call publishers ?short-sighted non-creatives.? Just pick some categories and color inside the lines. We?ll all be happier.

Have you ever been confused about categories? How did you solve your dilemma?

Cooper Union Students Occupy President's Office To Protest Tuition Announcement

NEW YORK -- A group of students at Cooper Union took over the college president's office Wednesday to protest a decision to begin charging tuition for the first time in at least a century.

At least 50 students took over President Jamshed Bharucha's office on the 7th floor of the school's Foundation Building in Manhattan, according to an email from the group. Once inside, they signed a statement of no confidence in Bharucha, according to posts on Twitter.

Citing a $12 million annual budget deficit, the Cooper Union Board of Trustees announced in April it had decided to scale back the full scholarship it has traditionally awarded all admitted students. Starting in the fall of 2014, new students with the ability to pay will be billed for half the tuition costs, currently $19,000 per semester. Current students won't be affected.

"All the people upstairs and doing these sorts of actions to keep this school free -- we're not fighting for ourselves," senior Aaron Graham told the Village Voice. "We're fighting for future students because we're all already guaranteed the scholarship we've been given."

Cooper Union spokeswoman Claire McCarthy said: "We consider this a peaceful and nonviolent action. Talks with students are ongoing."

A group of students in December occupied the top floor of the Foundation Building for a week in December after rumors that the school's financial problems may lead officials to begin charging tuition.

Victoria Sobel, one of the students occupying the president's office, told HuffPost the group hopes the protest will alter trustees' decision about scholarships. "I'm confident that it will have a large effect," Sobel said.

Sobel said the students haven't barricaded themselves inside the office. The group has not decided how long they will stay, she said. "This is just the beginning" of students' fight against tuition, she vowed.

Cooper Union students planned a 6 p.m. Wednesday demonstration at Cooper Square, which organizers said will be attended by students from several Manhattan colleges.

Anlaysis: Indonesia may shoot own-goal with DBS-Danamon decision

By Saeed Azhar and Janeman Latul

SINGAPORE/JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia is expected within days to give a green light to its biggest foreign bank takeover, but sources say the deal conditions are likely to send a very different signal: foreign ownership and bank consolidation are now in the slow lane.

Indonesia's bank regulator is due this month to decide on Singapore bank DBS Group's $7.2 billion bid for local lender PT Bank Danamon, and sources close to the deal expect it will force DBS to complete the transaction in two steps over 18 months.

That would be in accordance with the central bank's "two-stage" guidance for bank takeovers that were issued around the same time as the DBS-Danamon deal was announced last year.

However, some foreign bidders have been hoping that the guidelines would not be enforced strictly and that exceptions would be made for deals like DBS-Danamon, which is billed as one that would help modernise and strengthen the sector.

Those hopes look set to be dashed, according to the sources and mergers-and-acquisitions lawyers following the case closely.

"The main issue for those foreign investors with strong track records looking to acquire controlling stakes in Indonesian banks is that the two-stage acquisition process seems to be illogical and unnecessary," Jake Robson, a Singapore-based partner at law firm Norton Rose.

"If this two-stage acquisition process is not waived by BI (Bank Indonesia) this will certainly be seen negatively by foreign investors and could, as a result in the short term, have the opposite effect to the stated objectives of the new regulations, including consolidation of the industry...."

Indonesia acknowledges that its over-crowded and stodgy banking industry needs consolidation and an infusion of expertise that experienced international lenders can bring. In return, foreign banks see a market with huge potential.

Only about 40 percent of Indonesia's 240 million people have bank accounts and most personal borrowing is done outside the banking sector. Yet the nation has more than 120 commercial lenders, most of them minnows unable to compete with the top 10 banks which control 80 percent of total bank assets.

For foreign banks, the takeover guidelines and Indonesia's desire to strengthen its banking system are incompatible.

"For the acquirer, there is an uncertainty of eventual majority control.... Hence before securing control, the incentive to transform (the local lender) would be somewhat diluted," said Christopher Wong, senior investment manager at Aberdeen Asset Management Asia, which owns DBS shares.

Under the guidelines, bidders cannot take control of a lender in one go. They can first take a 40 percent stake but must then undergo three financial-soundness tests, one every six months, before moving to majority ownership.

The guidelines are meant to apply to all takeovers - whether by a foreign or local bidder - but advisers expect it to be policed more strictly in the case of foreign banks, which already control six of the top 15 local banks, according to central bank data.

Indonesia's comparative credit-to-GDP ratio:

GO-SLOW SIGN

"This ruling on ownership cap is basically directed at foreign banks. I've been told by the central bankers but they can't say that publicly in order to avoid problems with other countries," said the chief executive of one Indonesian bank, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Local banks, especially the major banks, will be the ones who benefit from this regulation as they can buy the smaller banks easily and cheaply."

He said Indonesia was also likely to increase capital requirements for banks, pushing smaller banks into the arms of larger ones.

Bank Indonesia, however, said the takeover guidelines applied evenly to both local and foreign banks, though it acknowledged that there was some confusion surrounding them.

"There is some confusion. This regulation is valid for everyone, not only foreigners," said Halim Alamsjah, a deputy central bank governor whose remit includes banking.

It is unclear whether DBS, which is buying the Danamon stake from Singapore's state investment arm Temasek, would go ahead with the takeover if forced to abide by the new guidelines.

At the Singapore bank's earnings briefing last week, DBS Chief Executive Piyush Gupta said he would await Bank Indonesia's announcement before deciding the fate of the deal.

"I have no update on Danamon. Our application is still with BI and we are awaiting BI's review and decision-making."

However, when asked about the merits of taking minority stakes in another developing market, Vietnam, Gupta replied:

"We are very reluctant to do minority positions. For us minority positions tend to be private-equity type of transactions and we rather do control transactions where we can really influence. We like being operating managers."

Under Indonesia's two-step guidelines, there is no guarantees an acquirer - especially a foreign one - will be allowed to take the second step to control.

However, some foreign bidders appear ready to take the risk that they won't get past first base.

Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp is in advanced talks to buy a $1.3 billion stake in Bank Tabungan Pensiunan Nasional Tbk Pt (BTPN) , an Indonesian lender backed by TPG Capital, people familiar with the matter say.

And several foreign banks have been sitting on minority stakes for some time, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group's 39 percent stake in Bank Panin and Standard Chartered's 38 percent stake in Bank Permata .

'ALL THE BIG BOYS ARE HERE'

Most if not all of them, though, would be eager to move to control. In the case of DBS, which has a small wholly owned local unit, PT Bank DBS Indonesia, it would also like to combine Danamon and DBS Indonesia to create the country's fifth-largest lender.

At least three banking deals worth $3.2 billion are being held back due to the regulatory uncertainty, including U.S. private equity firm TPG Capital's planned sale to Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui of a 58.5 percent stake in BTPN and Rabobank's exit from Indonesia, bankers said.

"All the big boys are here," said Cliff Rees, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Jakarta.

However, he added, Indonesia needed to continue to encourage foreign capital. If it forced DBS and other foreign acquirers into a slow two-step, it would fail to achieve its stated target of more than halving the number of banks over the next decade.

"Their vision was to have 40-50 banks. That is not going to happen over the next 10 years."

Suicide Among Baby Boomers Up Sharply - Know These Warning ...

Suicide rates among middle-aged Americans have risen sharply in the U.S. during the past decade, prompting concern that the recession and slowly recovering economy in recent years is negatively impacting baby boomers who may be stressed to the point of inflicting harm to themselves.

According to the CDC in its May 3, 2013 issue of its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, more people now die of suicide than they do in car accidents, which killed 33,687 Americans in 2012, compared to 38,364 who died from suicide.

The increase in middle-age suicide represents as shift away from a problem that has more often been associated with teens and seniors.

Indeed, the suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 35 and 64 increased by almost 30 percent during the years from 1999 to 2010. Specifically, the suicide rate for those in middle age jumped from 13.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 1999 to 17.6 deaths per 100,000 people in 2010.

For both men and women who are middle-aged, suicide rates continue to rise. However, significantly more men commit suicide than women, with the rate for men at 27.3 deaths per 100,000, compared to women at 8.1 deaths per 100,000.

The biggest increase in suicide was for men in their 50s, with 30 out of 100,000 in that age group killing themselves, up 50 percent. The biggest increase in women was seen in those between the ages of 60 and 64, with 7 out of 100,000 committing suicide for a rate increase of nearly 60 percent.

According to some experts, these new numbers for suicide rates are actually on the low side.

?It?s vastly underreported,? said Julie Phillips, an associate professor of sociology at Rutgers University who has also conducted research on rising suicide rates. ?We know we?re not counting all suicides.?

Although researchers admit that no one can know for sure why these suicide rates have increased, the CDC says there are a number of possible explanations.

?It is the baby boomer group where we see the highest rates of suicide,? said CDC deputy director, Ileana Arias. ?There may be something about that group, and how they think about life issues and their life choices that may make a difference.?

The suicide rate increase may also be due to the recession and slow recovery of the economy over the past decade. Historically, the rate of suicide typically increases during economically difficult times.

?The increase does coincide with a decrease in financial standing for a lot of families over the same time period,? Dr. Arias said.

The recent jump in suicides has also been attributed to the widespread availability of prescription narcotics, such as oxycodone, which can cause death if taken in large doses.

For most people who commit suicide, however, self-inflicted gunshots from firearms remains the weapon of choice. Suicide by poisoning is also on the rise, as are intentional overdoses of prescription drugs and hangings ? with poisoning deaths up 24 percent in the last decade and hangings up 81 percent during that same time period.

For baby boomers ? sometimes referred to as the ?Sandwich Generation? ? hitting middle age can be a time of increased stress due to caring for older children and aging parents at the same time. As Dr. Arias points out, suicide rates among this generation may be higher because they have life challenges and financial circumstances that are unique to them.

?Their lives are configured a little differently than it has been in the past for that age group,? Dr. Arias said. ?It may not be that they are more sensitive or that they have a predisposition to suicide, but that they may be dealing with more.?

According to Phillips, changes in marriage, social isolation and family roles mean many of the pressures faced by baby boomers will continue in the next generation.

?The boomers had great expectations for what their life might look like, but I think perhaps it hasn?t panned out that way,? said Phillips. ?All these conditions the boomers are facing, future cohorts are going to be facing many of these conditions as well.?

In the meantime, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) offers the following tips for helping to prevent suicide. Although, most apply primarily to school children and teens, the following may still apply to older adults, particularly as it pertains to knowing the warning signs and then taking action to help someone if you suspect they may be suicidal:

Suicide Warning Signs

1. Suicide notes. These are a very real sign of danger and should be taken seriously.

2. Threats. Threats may be direct statements (?I want to die.? ?I am going to kill myself?) or, unfortunately, indirect comments (?The world would be better without me?, ?Nobody will miss me anyway?). Among teenagers, indirect clues could be offered through joking or through comments in school assignments, particularly creative writing or artwork. Younger children and those who may have some delays in their development may not be able to express their feelings in words, but may provide indirect clues in the form of acting-out, violent behavior, often with threatening or suicidal comments.

3. Previous attempts. If a child or teenager has attempted suicide in the past, there is a greater likelihood that he or she will try again. Be very observant of any friends who have tried suicide before.

4. Depression (helplessness/hopelessness). When symptoms of depression include strong thoughts of helplessness and hopelessness, a child or adolescent is possibly at greater risk for suicide. Watch out for behaviors or comments that indicate that your friend is feeling overwhelmed by sadness or pessimistic views of their future.

5. ?Masked? depression. Sometimes risk-taking behaviors can include acts of aggression, gunplay, and alcohol/substance abuse. While your friend does not acted ?depressed,? their behavior suggests that they are not concerned about their own safety.

6. Final arrangements. This behavior may take many forms. In adolescents, it might be giving away prized possessions such as jewelry, clothing, journals or pictures.

7. Efforts to hurt oneself. Self-injury behaviors are warning signs for young children as well as teenagers. Common self-destructive behaviors include running into traffic, jumping from heights, and scratching/cutting/marking the body.

8. Inability to concentrate or think clearly. Such problems may be reflected in classroom behavior, homework habits, academic performance, household chores, even conversation. If your friend starts skipping classes, getting poor grades, acting up in class, forgetting or poorly performing chores around the house or talking in a way that suggests they are having trouble concentrating, these might be signs of stress and risk for suicide.

9. Changes in physical habits and appearance. Changes include inability to sleep or sleeping all the time, sudden weight gain or loss, disinterest in appearance or hygiene.

10. Sudden changes in personality, friends, behaviors. Parents, teachers and friends are often the best observers of sudden changes in suicidal students. Changes can include withdrawing from friends and family, skipping school or classes, loss of involvement in activities that were once important, and avoiding friends.

11. Death and suicidal themes. These might appear in classroom drawings, work samples, journals or homework.

12. Plan/method/access. A suicidal child or adolescent may show an increased interest in guns and other weapons, may seem to have increased access to guns, pills, etc., and/or may talk about or hint at a suicide plan. The greater the planning, the greater the potential for suicide.

What Can You Do to Help a Friend?

1. Know the warning signs! Read over the list above and keep it in a safe place.

2. Do not be afraid to talk to your friends. Listen to their feelings. Make sure they know how important they are to you, but don?t believe you can keep them from hurting themselves on your own. Preventing suicide will require adult help.

3. Make no deals. Never keep secret a friend's suicidal plans or thoughts. You can not promise that you will not tell?you have to tell to save your friend!

4. Tell an adult. Talk to your parent, your friend's parent, your school?s psychologist or counselor-- a trusted adult. And don?t wait! Don?t be afraid that the adults will not believe you or take you seriously?keep talking until they listen! Even if you are not sure your friend is suicidal, talk to someone. It?s OK if you ?jump the gun??this is definitely the time to be safe and not sorry!

5. Ask if your school has a crisis team. Many schools (elementary, middle and high schools) have organized crisis teams, which include teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists and principals. These teams help train all staff to recognize warning signs of suicide as well as how to help in a crisis situation. These teams can also help students understand warning signs of violence and suicide. If your school does not have a crisis team, ask your Student Council or faculty advisor to look into starting a team.

Next NRA president to lead its court fights

By Andrea Lorenz

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Alabama lawyer Jim Porter, in line to become the next president of the National Rifle Association, is expected to spearhead the group's court challenges of gun-control laws enacted in several states since the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting massacre.

Porter, 64, the son of another Alabama lawyer who served as NRA president from 1959 to 1961, is likely to succeed David Keene on Monday in the two-year post at the nation's leading gun-rights organization.

The longtime member is chairman of the legal affairs committee for the NRA, which has headed off federal attempts to approve new gun ownership restrictions, including a U.S. Senate proposal last month for expanded background checks.

Porter told NRA members at their annual convention in Houston on Saturday that President Barack Obama was "AWOL" on border security, the deficit and national security, but "scheming and plotting" to take away Americans' gun rights.

"There is nothing, nothing that criminals do with guns that isn't already against the law," Porter said.

In a speech to the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association in June 2012, Porter called Obama a "fake" president and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder "rabidly un-American."

The NRA's focus is far different now from what it was when Porter's father, Irvine Porter, led the organization. The NRA then focused mainly on shooting and hunting. Its emphasis shifted in later decades to lobbying against restrictions on guns.

Porter, the NRA's first-vice president, who by tradition is expected to be elected president on Monday by the board, introduced the outgoing president, Keene.

"If I have anything to say about it, you just heard from your next president of your National Rifle Association," Keene told the crowd..

Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's executive vice president and chief executive, remains the most visible leader of the group.

CHALLENGING GUN RESTRICTIONS

Keene told the Washington Times earlier this week that Porter would be a "perfect match" as NRA president as it focuses on court challenges to state laws restricting gun ownership.

"As we are likely to win most of the legislative battles in Congress, we will have to move to courts to undo the restrictions placed on gun owners' rights in New York, Connecticut, Maryland and Colorado," Keene told the newspaper.

Connecticut and New York expanded assault weapons bans and restricted the capacity of ammunition magazines after a gunman killed 20 students and six adults at a Connecticut school in December.

Colorado, where a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 others in July 2012 at a midnight showing of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," approved restrictions on the size of ammunition clips and universal background checks.

Porter, a 1971 graduate of the University of Alabama, told the New York group last year that the fight to protect the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution setting out the right to bear arms had just begun, and that Obama's "entire administration is anti-gun, anti-freedom, anti-Second Amendment."

On Saturday, Tom King, an NRA board member from East Greenbush, New York, said Porter was a likable family man and successful attorney who would be a good NRA president.

"I say things that are controversial too, everybody does," King said. "If you want to take something out of context and say, 'He said that, that's controversial,' and you want to attack him for that, that's your prerogative or anyone else's prerogative, but Jim is a good man."
