Google Cloud Print gets Windows compatibility outside of Chrome

It should come as no surprise that Google brought Cloud Print to its own offerings first, but now the service is ready to spread its wings a bit. The company announced today that Cloud Printer is coming to Windows apps like Adobe reader, letting you bypass the necessity for Chrome. Using the driver, you'll be able to see an entry for the service in your usual drop down of networked printers and, if all goes according to plan, print to your heart's content. Netanyahu: Morsi fall a sign of political Islam's weakness

Uriel Sinai / AP

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, second right, chairs?the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, July 21, 2013.

By Sarah Marsh, Reuters

BERLIN ? In rare remarks on Egypt's government crisis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that the fall of the president, Mohamed Morsi, demonstrates the weaknesses of political Islamist movements.

"I believe that over the long haul these radical Islamic regimes are going to fail because they don't offer the adequate enfranchisement that you need to develop a country economically, politically and culturally," Netanyahu told the German weekly Welt am Sonntag.

He said he thought radical Islamism was wholly unsuited to dealing with a global economic and information revolution, and "goes right back to medievalism against the whole thrust of modernity, so over time it's bound to fail".

Israel had previously responded more cautiously to Morsi's removal by the Egyptian army on July 3. Netanyahu avoided any comment at the time, though a confidant expressed hope that Egypt's new leaders may restore largely frozen contacts with Israel.

In the interview, Netanyahu reiterated Israel's concern that a U.S.-brokered 1979 peace treaty with Egypt should remain intact, alluding also to a surge of violence in a Sinai border region since Israel's ally Hosni Mubarak was toppled from power in Egypt two years ago.

"Preserving the peace with Egypt through these convulsions is of central importance to us," Netanyahu said.?

South Africa Govt Reverses ?Unfortunate? Comments On Zimbabwe Elections

Zimbabwe: Mugabe Goes After Lindiwe Zulu

South Africa on Sunday reversed comments a facilitator to the GPA, Lindiwe Zulu was said to have made on Friday.

President Jacob Zuma?s spokesman, Mac Maharaj?described the comments as ?unfortunate?.

The Presidency has noted with great concern, recent unfortunate statements made on the situation in Zimbabwe, which have been attributed to a member of the technical team supporting the Facilitator, President Jacob Zuma, the statement read.screamer_lindiwe_zulu

On Friday Lindiwe Zulu was quoted by the APF news agency saying that there were challenges leading up to the July 31 elections in Zimbabwe, following problems with early voting.

She was commenting after thousands of Zimbabwean security forces failed?to?vote with polling stations opening late, and lacking indelible ink, stamps, voter rolls, ballot papers, and boxes.

?If things didn?t go right in the special vote, those things need to be looked into by the time of elections on July 31,? said Zulu.

But Zuma?s spokesman, Mac Maharaj said only President Jacob Zuma is authorised to make comments on the Zimbabwean situation and no one else.

?The Facilitator, President Jacob Zuma, appointed a three person facilitation team to provide technical support. The team comprises Mr Charles Nqakula, High Commissioner to Mozambique as the Head, Mr Mac Maharaj, Special Envoy and spokesperson to the President and Ms Lindiwe Zulu, International Relations Advisor to the President. The technical team supports the Facilitator and cannot impose its views on Zimbabwe nor make public pronouncements. Only President Zuma has the mandate to speak on Zimbabwe on behalf of SADC on facilitation issues.

?A number of statements have been made during the facilitation process which have been unauthorised and which are regrettable and unfortunate. Some of the utterances have also been inaccurate.

?The Presidency wishes to correct in particular the reports this weekend that President Zuma telephoned President Robert Mugabe to express his unhappiness about preparations for the Zimbabwean elections. No such telephone call has been made. The report is incorrect.

?President Zuma has also been alerted to inappropriate postings in the social media on the Zimbabwean situation.

?South Africa remains fully committed to the warm historical relations with the Republic of Zimbabwe and wishes the people of Zimbabwe well as they prepare for the elections.??

This development came after President Robert Mugabe vowed to complain to Zuma about Zulu?s conduct.

Chrome OS beta update brings 'immersive' mode, smarter app search and UI tweaks

If you're running Chrome OS betas like it's not even a thing, we're pegging you as a bit of a maverick. The latest update (29.0.1537.32) rewards your non-conformity with a bevy of small, but useful new features. There's Kernel 3.8 for the Pixel and Samsung 550 users, but likely you're more interested in the new "immersive" full screen mode that hides the shelf and tool bar. Or, what about the ability to pin apps to the shells with drag and drop? There's other tricks, too, such as wallpaper sync (across all your machines), UI scaling and a smarter app launcher. There's a full list at the source, but knowing you, you already went there, right?

Giants' Hill suspended for violating NFL's substance abuse policy

Giants safety Will Hill is hit by the NFL with a four-game ban that starts with season opener.

Giants safety Will Hill has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL?s policy on ?substances of abuse,? a second NFL offense following his ban for performance-enhancing drug use last season.

Hill can participate in training camp and preseason games. His suspension will begin with the regular-season opener and end on Sept. 30.

The 23-year-old safety had previously been suspended four games last October for violating the NFL?s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He claimed his positive test was for Adderall.

This time, the suspension is not for PEDs. It?s for a violation of the ?NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.? He can appeal.

The former star at St. Peter?s Prep in Jersey City went undrafted out of the University of Florida in 2011 after rumors of drug use. The 6-1, 207-pound defender recorded 21 tackles for the Giants in 12 games last season.

G20 finance plan targets taxes from multinationals

Russia G20 Global Tax

Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF), attends a meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers in Moscow, Russia, Friday, July 19, 2013. Stashing profits offshore may soon get tougher for companies, thanks to an ambitious plan released Friday by the finance chiefs of leading world economies aimed at forcing multinationals to pay more taxes. Low tax payments by major global companies - including Google, Amazon, Facebook and Starbucks - have sparked public anger in Europe recently, as governments are struggling with high debts, low growth and austerity measures that are hitting ordinary taxpayers.

? Stashing profits offshore may soon get tougher for companies, thanks to an ambitious plan released Friday by the finance chiefs of leading world economies aimed at forcing multinationals to pay more taxes.

Low tax payments by major global companies ? including Google, Amazon, Facebook and Starbucks ? have sparked public anger in Europe recently, as governments are struggling with high debts, low growth and austerity measures that are hitting ordinary taxpayers.

"National tax laws have not kept pace with the globalization of corporations and the digital economy, leaving gaps that can be exploited by multinational corporations to artificially reduce their taxes," the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said in announcing the new tax plan Friday. It was unveiled at a meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers in Moscow.

The Paris-based OECD says that the new 15-point plan includes ways to close loopholes and allow countries to tax profits held in offshore subsidiaries. If it is adopted, the measures would be implemented over the next two years and target such practices as deducting the same expense more than once, in more than one country.

The plan also has a special focus on the online economy, where commerce flows across borders constantly and it's harder to tie revenue and profit to a single country.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew hailed the plan as a "major step toward addressing tax avoidance by multinational firms." In a statement out of Washington, he said, "We must address the persistent issue of 'stateless income,' which undermines confidence in our tax system at all levels."

The plan's designers insist it isn't anti-business, and is in part aimed at making things more consistent for companies and governments.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, the host of Friday's G-20 meetings, said it's aimed at allowing "multinational corporations to prosper without loading a higher tax burden on domestic companies and individual taxpayers."

G-20 finance officials are also looking at giving countries a score of 1 to 4 depending on how cooperative they are with other governments on tax evasion, tax fraud and money laundering.

The OECD has been at the forefront of efforts to tackle tax evasion, especially since the global financial meltdown five years ago. But repeated pledges at G-20 meetings have not always lived up to their promise, and companies around the world continue to turn regularly to tax havens to reduce their tax burden.

The problem has gained urgency as European governments, struggling with exceptionally tight budgets, become more determined to recover any revenue they can from rich companies seen as avoiding fair taxes.

Over the past year, Britain, France and Germany have pushed particularly hard for more coordinated international efforts to get corporations paying more taxes. But some countries in Europe, such as Ireland and Luxembourg, have been reluctant to join in because they currently attract major companies by offering low corporate taxes.

Last month, an influential committee of British lawmakers issued a scathing report that said Google made highly contrived arrangements serving no purpose other than to avoid paying full taxes.

Google argues that its practices are legal and transparent, and that the overwhelming majority of sales actually occur at the company's European head office in Ireland ? where corporate tax rates are much lower than Britain.

Advocates for the world's poor welcomed Friday's pledge, but some said it still doesn't go far enough.

Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan urged the leaders of the G-20 to set aside differences and adopt the tax evasion plan when they meet in Russia in September.

In a post on the website of the Elders, a group of leading elder statesmen, he criticized "the corrosive effects of unfair tax practices."

"Something is indeed gravely amiss when multi-billion dollar companies are paying a lower rate of tax than the citizens from whom they derive their profits," he wrote.

He said Africa in particular has suffered, noting that it loses more in illicit financial outflows than it receives in international aid.

Washington-based nongovernmental group Global Financial Integrity said the OECD should have pushed for even more tax transparency by companies, such as listing how much money they earn in each country.

"Requiring companies to disclose where they're operating, where they're making their profits, and where they're paying taxes is a straightforward way to detect and deter corporate tax dodging," it said.

Tourists return to Greece's summer resorts, in boost for economy

By Renee Maltezou

ATHENS (Reuters) - Foreign tourists are returning to Greece's sun-drenched islands and ancient temples, central bank data showed on Friday, boosting hopes that the key sector may help the crisis-hit country pull itself out of a severe economic recession.

Tourism figures have clearly benefited from comparison to last year, when speculation about Greece being forced out of the euro and fears of social unrest had scared away many visitors before the peak summer holiday season.

But Greece's tourist industry is taking heart from data showing a 38.5 percent annual rise in receipts in May and a 15.5 percent increase in the first five months this year and predicts a bumper season.

"It's a very positive sign," Yannis Retsos, the head of Greece's Hoteliers told Reuters. "I believe this upward trend will continue in the coming months. With the help of tourism, Greece could take a first step towards growth."

Greece's current account balance also swung to a small surplus in May, helped by a narrower trade gap and higher tourism receipts.

Tourism accounts for about 17 percent of output and one in five jobs in a country where unemployment has risen to about 27 percent. Tourism officials see a 10 percent revenue rise in 2013, to 11 billion euros, on the back of an expected record 17 million visitors, one million more than in 2012.

A popular destination mainly for Germans and Britons for decades, Greece is now attracting increasing numbers of tourists from Eastern Europe, with these markets accounting for about a fifth of total arrivals, a trend which is expected to continue.

DEPRESSED GREEKS

In the first six months of the year, foreign tourist arrivals increased 10 percent annually with summer resorts such as the Aegean island of Mykonos seeing a 60 percent increase in airport arrivals.

Although Greece expects more foreign visitors this year, domestic tourism - which accounts for up to 25 percent of total tourism revenues - has been severely hit and is seen remaining at last year's depressed levels, tourism bodies have said.

Greek incomes are being severely squeezed, cut by about 30 percent on average since the crisis started 2009, with signs that some Greek families can no longer afford long summer vacation or frequent weekend escapes away from Athens to nearby islands.

A survey conducted earlier this month by the consumers' institute INKA showed that more than two thirds of Greeks have not planned a summer holiday this year.

About 70 percent of the 545 respondents said that this was mainly due to financial reasons and 20 percent said job and income uncertainty had deterred them from making the decision.

The majority of Greek vacationers said their getaway would last up to five days and more than half of those polled said that they would stay with family or friends rather than spend money on hotels.

The highly-anticipated Moto X will be shown off on Aug. 1.

Motorola will show off the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone on Aug. 1 in New York City.

Motorola has teased that the new device will be "designed by you," and so expectations are that it will be highly user-customizable. (Users might have a choice of device color or configurations, although details are still to come.) Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has previously confirmed that the device will be assembled in the U.S. and suggested that it will indeed ship this fall.

Rumors about the Moto X have been swirling ever since Google completed its acquisition of Motorola in May 2012 (though the device was dubbed the "X Phone" for a long time.)

"Our role in inventing the mobile phone is well known," Motorola said in a press release reconfirming that the Moto X will be assembled in the U.S., specifically in Texas. "We?re happy to be shaping its future as well."

Not yet there: the problems with mobile apps and media - Talk Mobile

There was a time when the word 'ecosystem' referred exclusively to the environmental version, describing the interdependent parts of a biome. Today that term has been expanded to modern electronics.

No longer are our devices lone islands that reach out into the void for content. Today they're supported by an array of services, perhaps most importantly those from the manufacturer that provide content to the user. That content spans typically spans a range of apps, music, movies, and television shows, and can include additional media like books, magazines, and more.

The smartphone could function without the connections into these media pipelines, just as the gazelle can function just fine on a diet of grass alone. But throw in a few bushes with additional nutrients - or stores that open up movies and apps and music - and you're off to the races.

But our ecosystems are hobbled by old systems digital, legal, and emotional. How do we move them forward, breaking the chains and allowing them to truly run free?

Video Editor Givit Beefs Up Social Experience With iPad App Update

-1The video editing app Givit is releasing an update to their iPad app today, an effort to bolster the social, video watching side of the platform. The app updates include an expanded screen view, hashtag tracking, and improved friend feeds ? nothing major, but necessary changes to make Givit a more viable social site. People tend to shoot and edit on their phones, making social a better bet for iPad use, which stands at 21% of total Givit activity. This comes at the behest of users who have been pushing for a more social experience lately. CEO and founder Greg Kostello told TechCrunch that although he initially imagined that users would edit their videos on Givit and then share through more established social platforms like Facebook and Twitter, they seem disinclined to do so. That’s an interesting finding given that Givit recently partnered with Dailymotion, the second largest video sharing site after YouTube. It was the first US app to integrate into the France-based Dailymotion’s API, and the partnership was intended to make Givit an easy feed to the site. But as it stands the vast majority of videos stay on Givit, despite a prominent “share” button placed front and center, Kostello said. This seems to be because users want to interact with makers with similar interests. Parkour pros with like-minded souls, for instance. Although Givit is appeasing its users with a better social platform, it will have to make some moves to encourage them to move their videos over to Dailymotion. If the “share” button has been there all along and users haven’t been eager to click on it, it should be interesting to see how they’ll accomplish that.

Xbox One to let gamers scan download codes using Kinect

Xbox One to let us scan download codes with Kinect, finally

Many console gamers know the drudgery of entering a download code with a gamepad or keyboard. Now that Kinect is part and parcel of the Xbox One experience, however, they'll always get to skip that step: Microsoft's Marc Whitten has revealed that system owners can scan the codes with the Kinect camera. While this is really an extension of what the original Kinect can do -- Kinectimals takes advantage of QR codes, for example -- it should be a big help for gamers who'd rather be playing than typing.

Apple files for iWatch trademark... in Japan

Apple files for iWatch trademark... in Japan

Apple has filed to trademark the term "iWatch" in Japan. Naoko Fujimura and Takashi Amano of Bloomberg report:

The maker of iPhones is seeking protection for the name which is categorized as being for products including a handheld computer or watch device, according to a June 3 filing with the Japan Patent Office that was made public last week. Takashi Takebayashi, a Tokyo-based spokesman for Apple, didn?t respond to a message left at his office seeking comment on the application.

Bloomberg also triples down on their rumor, from February, of 100 product designers at Apple working on the wearable device popularly referred to as "iWatch".

As to the term being filed for in Japan, given how much time, effort, and money Apple's put into securing i-prefaced product names and domains in the past, including ones they never actually used, like the iSlate, it's impossible to draw any conclusions from the process itself.

iMore has previously heard that the iWatch project is indeed moving forward at Apple as well. Like patents, however, it makes sense for Apple to grab anything and everything they can, even if it's only to keep such terms out of the hands of other companies, squatters, and competitors.

As an actual product, an iWatch would be to a watch what an iPhone was to a phone -- something that does far, far more, but packaged in a way that makes it understandable to the mainstream. In that context, "iWatch" does make a lot of sense, but is it the best alternative? Could Apple use "iPod" instead? Or something else entirely?
