Scotty McCreery had a lot to celebrate this weekend. The American Idol winner released his debut album, which is expected to top the Billboard charts, and also had his 18th birthday. Saturday afternoon, he gathered with close friends and family in a private suite after singing the National Anthem at the North Carolina State University football game, where guests enjoyed a cookies and cream ice cream cake from Cold Stone Creamery. That same day, he also received a special birthday gift, a plaque commemorating his first gold record for his single "I Love You This Big."

My Shifting Gaming Preferences ? Life and Times of a Philippine ...

I was speaking with Tarathiel23, one of the people from my gaming group earlier today, and he noted that I seemed to be a great deal more motivated in running games than playing them, and inquired to why that was the case.? After a moment of reflection, I told him that it was probably because I?d somehow grown more critical about the games that I?d like to play as of late.
This isn?t to say that the other GMs I know suck, but more of an issue of taste and my own inability to enjoy certain types of play.? Each and every one of the GMs in my group are good at their own thing, but so far, I?m really not quite feeling up to playing in any of the campaigns they?ve pitched.? I?m trying to go over the reasons as to why so that I can probably come to terms on why I don?t seem to be quite so motivated anymore.
- Freewheeling anime-inspired hijinks are no longer appealing to me ? Ranma 1/2 was fun to watch, and still gets a few chuckles out of me to this day, but seeing it in the context of an RPG wherein my character has to deal with or endure silliness is very difficult for me to get into nowadays.? Perhaps I?ve grown jaded, but that sort of thing is an almost guaranteed pass from me.
- I?m playing more for catharsis now than ever before ? Age and responsibilities tend to color my preferences, so playing in a game where my character is able to actually enact lasting and significant changes that matter to him at a personal level is something that I greatly enjoy more now.? I?m done with my doom-and-gloom fix, and would probably not enjoy a game where survival is the greatest reward in a session.
- I no longer have the time for severely complicated systems, or systems with multiple rules exceptions ? As was noted in an earlier post of mine, I?m not exactly the rules-happy guy I used to be a decade ago.? HERO still has a special place in my heart, but I doubt that I?ll be able to get a game up and running with the same kind of prep work I had before.? I can?t even look at the default rules for Exalted without feeling queasy.
- I?m tired of the same old game offerings ? This might be more than a little hypocritical, but I?m starting to get tired of the Exalted and L5R treadmill that our group tends to go with.? I love both settings, but at this point unless the campaign approaches either of these settings with a fresh take that explores new avenues?? I?ll probably pass.
Again this isn?t a criticism of any of the GMs in my group, but more of me trying to explore what it is that demotivates me when it comes to going for a particular campaign pitch as a player.? These days I see GMing as the only way to break out of the rut and hopefully get to try out new and less complicated approaches to get the same kind of fun out of the hobby as I used to.

China urges North Korea to build on U.S. dialogue (Reuters)
BEIJING (Reuters) ? China wants North Korea to deepen talks with South Korea and the United States in the hope of restarting nuclear negotiations, the visiting Chinese vice premier told his North Korean counterpart, state media reported on Monday.
Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang also told North Korean Premier Choe Yong-rim that Beijing would stay a firm ally of Pyongyang, which is contending with food shortages, international isolation and trying to ensure a smooth succession.
Li, 56, is the favorite to become premier from early 2013, when Wen Jiabao steps down.
Pyongyang has stirred regional tensions with its nuclear arms ambitions, missile tests and deadly confrontations across the divided peninsula last year. But recently it has reached out to Seoul and Washington and will hold talks with U.S. officials in Geneva later on Monday.
"China supports North Korea maintaining a correct focus on engagement and dialogue," Li told Choe on Sunday, according to China's official Xinhua news agency.
It was in China's and other countries' interests for Pyongyang to improve ties with Seoul and Washington, avoiding instability on the peninsula, said Li.
North Korea should seek "early outcomes from the dialogue, and restarting six-party talks as soon as possible to advance the denuclearization of the (Korean) peninsula," he added.
The intermittent six-party talks bring together China, Japan, Russia, both Koreas and the United States. They reached an agreement in September 2005 under which the North agreed to abandon its nuclear programs in exchange for economic and diplomatic incentives to be provided by other parties.
The talks and the agreement were a diplomatic trophy for Beijing. But North Korea walked out of the negotiations more than two years ago after the United Nations imposed fresh sanctions for a long-range missile test. The following month it conducted a second nuclear test.
Beijing has stood by the North, which it regards as a brittle but vital bulwark against the influence of the United States and its allies. But China has also tried to build ties with South Korea, a much bigger trade partner, and to revive the talks on North Korean nuclear disarmament.
Ahead of the talks in Geneva, U.S. officials have said North Korea must make real steps to heal ties with South Korea and show it is sincere about nuclear disarmament before the six-party talks can resume.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Beijing hoped the talks in Switzerland "will help to enhance mutual confidence and understanding."
"We also hope that this engagement will create conditions for appropriately resolving problems facing the restart of the six-party talks," she told a regular news briefing.
During his three-day visit to North Korea that began on Sunday, Li is being accompanied by senior diplomats and economic officials, including Chen Yuan, chairman of China Development Bank.
China fears that the North's frayed and isolated economy could fuel instability as its leader, Kim Jong-il, lays the ground for a leadership succession in the dynastic state, and Li pressed Beijing's case for stronger trade ties.
Both sides should "maintain the steady and rapid growth of bilateral trade, promoting key cooperative projects in a positive and steady-handed way," Li told Choe.
China has sought to draw North Korea closer with economic incentives and trade between the two countries grew to $3.1 billion in the first seven months of 2011, an 87 percent increase from the same period last year, according to Chinese customs data.
After visiting the North, Li travels to South Korea from Wednesday for two days.

UN council elections head into extra rounds (AP)
UNITED NATIONS ? Pakistan, Morocco, Guatemala, and Togo were elected to two-year Security Council terms on Friday, but the balloting for the fifth seat went into extra rounds after U.N. members failed to give a majority to one of two remaining candidates for the East European seat.
Balloting went into a fifth round late Friday afternoon after the previous tally showed 98 votes for Slovenia and 93 for Azerbaijan. Hungary, which also had been a candidate for the sole East Europe slot, was earlier knocked out of the running due to a low vote count.
U.N. General Assembly members elected Pakistan, Morocco and Guatemala in the first round when it gave each the two-thirds majority it needed to join the United Nations' most powerful body. Togo was elected in the third round.
The new members will assume their posts on Jan. 1 and serve through the end of 2013.
Security Council seats are highly coveted because they give countries a strong voice in matters dealing with international peace and security.
"We are honored and privileged to join such an esteemed body and look forward to the positive contributions we will make to its work in maintaining and promoting international peace and security," said Togo President Faure Gnassingbe, who traveled to New York for the vote.
The new makeup puts Pakistan on the council alongside its regional rival India, which like Colombia, Germany, Portugal and South Africa is serving a two-year term that wraps up at the end of 2012. They'll also serve with the five permanent, veto-wielding members: China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States.
"We had a very tough fight," Pakistani Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon said. "Hopefully we will be working well with all of the other council members, especially India."
Because Guatemala has never recognized a Palestinian state, the new council may also be less inclined to support the Palestinians' request for U.N. membership in the unlikely chance the bid carries into the new year. Palestinian diplomats said this week they are trying to muster support for a Nov. 11 vote.
The only certain winner going into Friday's election was Guatemala, which ran unopposed for the sole seat for Latin America and the Caribbean. Two seats for Africa, one for Asia and one for Eastern Europe were all contested.
The five new members replace Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria.
Because ballots are secret, multiple rounds of votes are common in Security Council elections. In 2007, a runoff between Guatemala and Venezuela went 47 rounds before Panama was finally offered, and accepted, as the Latin America candidate.
