Rush jams into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rush fans can relax. The band is now officially in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Canadian rockers were welcomed into the musical fraternity at Thursday's 28th annual induction ceremony by the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins. At the beginning of the Nokia Theatre event, the audience was already administering a standing ovation to the group.

"We've been saying for a long time that this wasn't a big deal," drummer-lyricist Neil Peart told the crowd, most of whom came out to specifically support the band. "It turns out, it kind of is."

Rush gained entry following its first appearance on the ballot after repeatedly being left off the list since gaining eligibility in 1998, to the great consternation of the legion of Rush fans who cried bias against progressive rock. The long wait didn't seem to matter at Thursday's star-studded concert event, which ran over five hours. Peart, lead singer Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson made up for lost time by launching into a rambunctious rendition of "Tom Sawyer" in front of the more than 7,000 attendees.

Rush was among this year's eight eclectic inductees, which also included fellow classic rockers Heart, singer-songwriter Randy Newman, rap group Public Enemy, disco queen Donna Summer, bluesman Albert King, and producers Quincy Jones and Lou Adler.

For Heart, entering the hall of fame isn't just about music.

"Our long and winding road has always been about the magical power of love and the enduring strength of family," said Nancy Wilson. "We came from an era when women normally did not rock and women were not expected to be leaders."

Wilson, her sister, Ann, and their band mates celebrated their induction with lively performances of "Crazy for You," ''Dreamboat Annie" and "Barracuda."

Adler was inducted by comedy duo Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong before being serenaded by Carole King with "So Far Away." Jack Nicholson was among Adler's fans in the audience who lavished the producer-mogul a standing ovation.

With his guitar around his neck, John Mayer inducted the late King before joining Gary Clark Jr. for King-tinged jam session.

"Albert King is why guitar-face was invented," joked Mayer.

Newman ? joined by Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and Tom Petty ? kicked off the Los Angeles ceremony with a performance of his classic "I Love L.A." It was an appropriate song choice given the fact this year's event marks the first time since 1993 that the Cleveland institution has held its induction ceremony on the West Coast. Backstage, Newman was matter-of-fact about his inclusion.

"I didn't think it would happen until I died or something," he said.

Oprah Winfrey was on hand to welcome Jones into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Usher lauded the producer-mogul with a rendition of the Michael Jackson tune "Rock with You."

Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to Summer with a medley of her hits, much to the delight of Flava Flav. The Public Enemy rapper, clad in an all-white tux, was the only person in the crowd who remained on his feet throughout her performance. He later commanded the microphone for a long-winded acceptance speech when Public Enemy was recognized. His colleague, Chuck D, was more succinct in his remarks.

"Let us all not forget, we all come from the damn blues," he told detractors.

Thursday's event concluded with all-star jam session featuring Rush, Heart, Chuck D, Grohl, Chris Cornell, Tom Morello and others riffing together on stage.

The induction ceremony will be broadcast May 18 on HBO.

Pass Any Filetype Between Android Devices Via Bluetooth

Android: You have two devices, one file, and zero connection to the internet. If that file is a common filetype, you can use bluetooth to pass it along however that only works with a small subset of filetypes (think jpg, gif...). Your file isn't one of the accepted filetypes. What's a user to do?

I recently ran into this issue because I have two devices, a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, and one saved game file that I wanted to pass in between (Final Fantasy Dimensions, for the curious). I was on a plane and since I didn't want to pony up $15 to access the in-flight wifi, I couldn't use apps like Carbon, Dropbox, or any of the other cloud based file transfer options. One of my devices was running out of battery and I needed to transfer the game file to the other if I wanted to keep playing.

Instead of giving up, I simply used my file explorer to rename the required game file to a .jpg. I used the file explorer's share menu to transfer it to my other device and then remove the .jpg and move it to the right spot on the SD card. It required root on both devices because of where this particular game stores the save file, but this hack would work for any file, really. I used a similar method on my PC to get around my work email server restricting .exe and .zip attachments.

Now, it should be noted that on flights, I believe you're not supposed to use bluetooth at all, though in a brief google search, I didn't come back with a 100% definitive answer if this was accurate or not. I chose to ignore and do it anyways, but you may feel differently.

One in four doesn't trust online retailers | Start Up Donut

April 19, 2013 - Rachel Miller

New surveys have highlighted the difficulties that online retailers have gaining the trust ? and business ? of customers.

The findings show that today's shoppers are more likely than ever before to abandon purchases and switch suppliers.

According to research commissioned by IT specialist Redwood Software, 72% of shoppers leave online marketplaces because they can't easily find what they are looking for. And two-thirds of consumers said they had terminated online purchases because they took too long (66%) or were too complicated (60.8%).

Meanwhile, new research conducted by Populus for Ukash, the online cash payment provider, has found that 46% of online shoppers feel frustrated by security questions when making purchases on the internet. And 39% have abandoned an online transaction because they thought they were being asked for too much personal information.

Ukash marketing director, Miranda McLean, said: "Whilst there's a recognition that the information is needed to protect consumers, there's also a fear that being asked too much might actually be putting them at more risk."

In another survey, conducted by information security compan, Integralis, one in four respondents said they didn't trust any company to secure their personal information online. It found that 65% of the 1,000 UK consumers surveyed trusted banks to look after their personal information online. However, the "trust factor" dropped to 36% for online retailers. In addition, social networks topped the list of "least trusted organisations" in the survey, chosen by 32% of respondents.

Mick Ebsworth, information security consulting practice director at Integralis, said: "What businesses should be concerned about is this intrinsic lack of trust by customers in online companies they are using on a regular basis. As we increasingly play out our lives on the Internet, whether it's banking, shopping, payments or social networking, organisations need to build information security into the DNA of their business."

The Redwood Software findings are presented in an infographic here.

Make a Pop-Up Flash Diffuser with an Empty Milk Jug

Flash diffusers, as we've seen often, can shave years off your photos by softening the hard light from the flash. This DIY project using a milk jug is more durable and snug fitting than other options (such as coffee filters) and is adaptable to the size of your flash.

To create the diffuser, you just need an empty milk jug. As Digital Camera World instructs, it's as simple as cutting out the handle section and making slits in it to fit over the flash.

Hit up the link below for the full instructions with photos.

Analysis: Citi reaps profits from hiring rainmakers 2-3 years ago

By David Henry

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In the summer of 2010, senior executives at Citigroup Inc told the board of directors the bank needed to hire more dealmakers to have any chance of snagging underwriting assignments and rich takeover advisory fees.

Competitors, including JPMorgan Chase & Co and Morgan Stanley, had picked off the company's rainmakers during the financial crisis, when Citigroup's stock fell more than 95 percent. After the U.S. government rescued the bank, it took a more direct role in setting Citigroup's pay.

If Citigroup did not hire more dealmakers, the executives said, the bank would lose more and more market share. The board, despite some naysayers, approved the hiring campaign. On Monday, the bank showed how its investment is paying off.

Citigroup reported that its investment banking revenue from advising companies on mergers rose 84 percent to $204 million in the first quarter. It was the third consecutive period of big gains in investment banking revenue.

"They've picked up people who have produced results," said Michael Holland, founder of money manager Holland & Co, which owns warrants on Citigroup shares. The results bode well for Michael Corbat, who took the reins at Citigroup in October, Holland added.

The improvement in investment banking is emblematic of the larger healing happening at the bank, which the government bailed out three times during the crisis. Citigroup is slowly improving results in its Citi Holdings unit, which houses the assets the bank is looking to shed, and its lending margins are holding strong even as they weaken at other banks.

Not everything is perfect at the bank. Revenue in its transaction services unit, a processing business that generates stable earnings, shrank in the first quarter. In its consumer bank, revenue was flat in the first quarter and has been little changed for some time.

But in investment banking, the hires are bearing fruit.

In 2010, Citigroup hired Stephen Trauber, a UBS AG energy banker reputed to be among the best-connected in Houston. Hiring him was not cheap: The Wall Street Journal reported that his pay package could hit $30 million over three years. Trauber hired more bankers, telling Reuters in June 2011 that the bank had added around 50 to its energy business.

Such hires are initially costly, and the revenue that results can take one to two years to appear in a bank's financial statements.

The investment banking operation came under considerable criticism within the bank because of its high compensation costs, said a company insider who declined to be named. And the numbers sometimes did not look good. In 2011, revenue fell 9.5 percent, while expenses rose 7.5 percent.

But the bank's revenue rose faster than expenses in the first quarter of 2013, boosted in part by higher deal activity. One example: Trauber's team helped advise China's CNOOC Ltd on its $15.1 billion takeover of Canadian oil and gas company Nexen Inc.

CLIMBING UP THE LEAGUE TABLES

Looking at deals that closed, the best measure of how mergers and acquisitions contributed to a bank's bottom line in a quarter, Citigroup was usually in the top three in global rankings before the financial crisis. It started falling in 2010 and sank as low as 11th in the first quarter of 2012. In the first quarter of 2013, however, the bank was ranked fifth, Thomson Reuters data show.

In North America, the bank fell as low as 14th in the first quarter of 2012 but was fifth in the first quarter of 2013.

The bank is making gains in equity underwriting rankings, too. Citigroup fell as low as ninth globally in the third quarter of 2008, and as recently as 2011 was seventh for several quarters. In the first quarter of 2013, the bank ranked second.

"The revenues have been increasing fairly steadily in investment banking for several quarters now," Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said in a conference call with journalists after the latest results were announced.

The gains are the result of the hiring campaign, Gerspach said, pointing to decisions to rebuild banking teams that specialize in energy, healthcare and technology industries.

At least some of that benefit has come because of the weakness of European rivals, competitors said. As big Continental banks grow less willing to lend to companies, Citigroup can step in and win back business. Citigroup's corporate lending profit - from loans made to big companies - rose in the first quarter of 2013 to $309 million from $12 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

More deals have closed in April and will contribute to deal revenue and profits that Citigroup reports in the second quarter.

Citigroup advised Elan Corp PLC in its $3.25 billion sale of its interest in Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis drug company, to Biogen Idec Inc.

Citigroup also advised Discovery Communications Inc in its $1.7 billion acquisition of the Nordic television and radio operations of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG.

Aubrey Plaza asked to leave MTV Movie Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Aubrey Plaza interrupted Will Ferrell's acceptance speech at the MTV Movie Awards, then left the building.

MTV officials confirmed Monday that the "Parks and Recreation" actress was asked to leave the ceremony after unexpectedly walking on stage and trying to take Ferrell's trophy as he accepted the Comedic Genius Award.

The irreverent awards show, held Sunday at Sony Pictures Studios, is known for its quirky stunts, but it's unclear whether the actress' stage-crashing move was planned.

"What's happening? Are you OK?" Ferrell asked the actress, who had the name of her new film scrawled across her chest in pen, as she grabbed his trophy with one hand and held a drink with the other.

He held tight to the golden popcorn and the actress returned to her seat in the front row.

"Aubrey Plaza, everyone," Ferrell continued. "Just like we rehearsed it."

Rebel Wilson hosted the ceremony and also won two awards: breakthrough performance and best musical moment for her work in "Pitch Perfect."

"The Avengers" was the night's big winner, taking three awards including movie of the year. "Silver Linings Playbook" also won three awards.

Emma Watson received the Trailblazer Award and Jamie Foxx accepted the Generation Award.

Ferrell was the inaugural recipient of the Comedic Genius Award, and he wore a three-piece suit covered in dollar bills to accept the prize.

"For those of you sitting here tonight who don't think I'm funny, I'll be happy to fight you in the parking lot after the show," he said.

No word on whether Plaza was waiting in the parking lot.

PebbleOS 1.10 supports third-party watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble OS 11 supports thirdparty watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble has been on a rapid cadence with smartwatch updates to justify those crowdfunded dollars, and it's not letting up just because watch shipments are well underway. PebbleOS 1.10 has arrived with support for custom watch faces built using the matching SDK. The revamp will be especially helpful for iOS users -- we see several fixes for crashes, permissions and power in store. Everyone gets options to disable backlighting and vibrations in certain conditions, too. As such, there's every reason to fire up the Pebble app for an upgrade, even if it's just for some visual variety.

[Thanks, Uday]
