The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.86 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,406.29.

The Nasdaq composite rose 9.93 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,976.78.

For the year:

The Dow is up 749.81, or 6.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 148.69, or 11.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 371.63, or 14.3 percent.
