Such location is considered a home, whether it is a house, shanty, mansion, or palace, as long as the members feel the love and belongingness with each other and they are able to freely express their real selves and identity, then it is no less than a home for them. On the other hand, the idea of a family is more than the togetherness of persons who share the same bloodline and ancestors. It transcends the mere presence of a mother, father and children.
Family refers to the social and emotional bond that connects individuals, whether related in blood or not, and they share the same love, care, and affection with each other. Although at this point home and family both refers to the emotional, psychological, and social bonds that connects the individuals forming home and family, these concepts are distinguished in this wise; the family always refer to the subjects of the house or the persons that dwell in it while the home generally refers to the structure or residence or it may also connote the emotional and psychological experience of a person to feel the belongingness, togetherness, commonality, love, and affection while being with such people or inside such house.
The divide between this actual or tangible side of home and family from the idea or conceptual realm of the said concepts is manifest among many families nowadays. Most members of the modern families experience the extreme absence of filial or parental care and affection. This is due to the complicated lifestyle that values more on the material aspects and performs most of human activities in a mechanical way.
To illustrate, parents who are into business traveling seem not to worry about being miles away from their children since there is the advancement of communication technology that offers virtual and real time presence such as video chatting on the web and even on mobile phones. All in all, the phone felt very comfortable to hold, and the lump that incorporates the projector isn't an eyesore in the slightest -- in fact, Samsung managed to add it in a rather stylish manner. Our only concern? The projector itself is found on the very top of the device without any recession, which will likely make it a candidate for being a fingerprint magnet. We also liked the dedicated power button for the projector on the top right of the phone, just above the normal phone switch.
We're also expecting to see some docks become available for the phone (which itself should be available in select markets in Q2) that will help stabilize it and keep it from shaking, as well as amplify sound for watching movies or video presentations. We'll add in more pics and videos as they come.

Blood mystery solved

You probably know your blood type: A, B, AB or O. You may even know if you're Rhesus positive or negative. But how about the Langereis blood type? Or the Junior blood type? Positive or negative? Most people have never even heard of these.
Yet this knowledge could be "a matter of life and death," says University of Vermont biologist Bryan Ballif.
While blood transfusion problems due to Langereis and Junior blood types are rare worldwide, several ethnic populations are at risk, Ballif notes. "More than 50,000 Japanese are thought to be Junior negative and may encounter blood transfusion problems or mother-fetus incompatibility," he writes.
But the molecular basis of these two blood types has remained a mystery ? until now.
In the February issue of Nature Genetics, Ballif and his colleagues report on their discovery of two proteins on red blood cells responsible for these lesser-known blood types.
Ballif identified the two molecules as specialized transport proteins named ABCB6 and ABCG2.
"Only 30 proteins have previously been identified as responsible for a basic blood type," Ballif notes, "but the count now reaches 32."
The last new blood group proteins to be discovered were nearly a decade ago, Ballif says, "so it's pretty remarkable to have two identified this year."
Both of the newly identified proteins are also associated with anticancer drug resistance, so the findings may also have implications for improved treatment of breast and other cancers.
As part of the international effort, Ballif, assistant professor in UVM's biology department, used a mass spectrometer funded by the Vermont Genetics Network. With this machine, he analyzed proteins purified by his longtime collaborator, Lionel Arnaud at the French National Institute for Blood Transfusion in Paris, France.
Ballif and Arnaud, in turn, relied on antibodies to Langereis and Junior blood antigens developed by Yoshihiko Tani at the Japanese Red Cross Osaka Blood Center and Toru Miyasaki at the Japanese Red Cross Hokkaido Blood Center.
After the protein identification in Vermont, the work returned to France. There Arnaud and his team conducted cellular and genetic tests confirming that these proteins were responsible for the Langereis and Junior blood types. "He was able to test the gene sequence," Ballif says, "and, sure enough, we found mutations in this particular gene for all the people in our sample who have these problems."
Beyond the ABO blood type and the Rhesus (Rh) blood type, the International Blood Transfusion Society recognizes twenty-eight additional blood types with names like Duffy, Kidd, Diego and Lutheran. But Langereis and Junior have not been on this list. Although the antigens for the Junior and Langereis (or Lan) blood types were identified decades ago in pregnant women having difficulties carrying babies with incompatible blood types, the genetic basis of these antigens has been unknown until now.
Therefore, "very few people learn if they are Langereis or Junior positive or negative," Ballif says.
"Transfusion support of individuals with an anti-Lan antibody is highly challenging," the research team wrote in Nature Genetics, "partly because of the scarcity of compatible blood donors but mainly because of the lack of reliable reagents for blood screening." And Junior-negative blood donors are extremely rare too. That may soon change.
With the findings from this new research, health care professionals will now be able to more rapidly and confidently screen for these novel blood group proteins, Ballif wrote in a recent news article. "This will leave them better prepared to have blood ready when blood transfusions or other tissue donations are required," he notes.
"Now that we know these proteins, it will become a routine test," he says.
This science may be especially important to organ transplant patients. "As we get better and better at transplants, we do everything we can to make a good match," Ballif says. But sometimes a tissue or organ transplant, that looked like a good match, doesn't work ? and the donated tissue is rejected, which can lead to many problems or death.
"We don't always know why there is rejection," Ballif says, "but it may have to do with these proteins."
The rejection of donated tissue or blood is caused by the way the immune system distinguishes self from not-self. "If our own blood cells don't have these proteins, they're not familiar to our immune system," Ballif says, so the new blood doesn't "look like self" to the complex cellular defenses of the immune system. "They'll develop antibodies against it," Ballif says, and try to kill off the perceived invaders. In short, the body starts to attack itself.
"Then you may be out of luck," says Ballif, who notes that in addition to certain Japanese populations, European Gypsies are also at higher risk for not carrying the Langereis and Junior blood type proteins.
"There are people in the United States who have these challenges too," he says, "but it's more rare."
Ballif and his international colleagues are not done with their search. "We're following up on more unknown blood types," he says. "There are probably on the order of 10 to 15 more of these unknown blood type systems ? where we know there is a problem but we don't know what the protein is that is causing the problem."
Although these other blood systems are very rare, "if you're that one individual, and you need a transfusion," Ballif says, "there's nothing more important for you to know."

Dividend Edition: A Nice Cold Stock

I recently wrote about how important it is for dividend investors to act like dividend investors, and not chase trends or hot stocks. (Read the issue here if you missed it.)
Today, I?m featuring a stock that provides investors with a perfect opportunity to follow that advice. This company is in an industry experiencing a cyclical downturn, and the stock? well, its two-year chart looks like this:

For a momentum investor, that flat-to-declining line screams ?stay away!? But as I wrote recently, true dividend investors try to buy low in order to maximize the yield they get on their purchase (yield equals the annual dividend divided by the price you paid for a stock).
This particular chart belongs to Encana Corp. (ECA), a Canadian natural gas producer. Encana was featured as a Spotlight Stock in the November 2011 Dividend Digest, shortly after the stock?s decline pushed its yield close to 4%. At the time, the stock was recommended by both Nathan Slaughter, editor of Scarcity & Real Wealth, and Patrick McKeough, editor of The Successful Investor.
Slaughter touched on the underpriced angle, writing: ?Just about every energy producer sells both oil and gas. They each favor one over the other. And most have been tilting toward oil over the past couple years. But Encana Corp. makes no bones about being a natural-gas specialist and is an outspoken industry advocate. Natural gas accounts for fully 96% of the company?s production mix (versus 4% for oil). ? That skewed weighting puts Encana at a disadvantage in the current pricing environment.?
Three months later, natural gas prices are still in the doldrums, and so is Encana. Cold winters make energy prices go up, and this winter has been anything but. Investors who bought ECA with the expectation of rising natural gas prices are still waiting. But for income investors, that means it?s still possible to lock in a 4% yield from ECA!

Which brings me to the reason I?m featuring Encana today: it was recently recommended as a new buy in The Primary Trend, edited by Barry Arnold. Arnold wrote:
?T. Boone Pickens has been the unconventional spokesperson for the natural gas industry, touting the long-term advantages of natural gas for the U.S. and extolling the virtues of those companies whose livelihood is reliant upon ?clean energy.? As a long-term proponent of the industry, we agree with Mr. Pickens, but the final arbiter of the success of this industry is price.
?As can be gleaned from the chart at right of the natural gas commodity, prices for natural gas futures have steadily declined throughout 2011 from a high of near $5 per mcf (million cubic feet) to recent trading levels of $2.50/mcf. Remarkably, natural gas traded at nearly $14/mcf in mid-2008 when crude oil traded near $150 per barrel. Times have changed and investors? opinions have as well, with consensus bulls on natural gas at only 17%?a very lopsided bearish outlook.
?We are bullish on natural gas with what we believe to be limited downside potential, and have purchased Encana Corp. in the Primary Trend Fund and client accounts.
?Encana Corp. is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is a leading North American producer of natural gas. It has prolific shale-gas developments that stretch from British Columbia to Texas and Louisiana. ECA is a simple investment story: l) It is a conservative call option on the price of natural gas shares; when gas was at $14/mcf in 2008, ECA traded above $50; 2) Encana produces 3.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day and its total proved reserves were 14.3 trillion cubic feet as of 12/31/11; 3) ECA pays a hefty $0.80 annual dividend, or 4.0%; and 4) due to the bearishness surrounding the industry, ECA is undervalued based on many metrics and trades at less than its book value of $22 per share.
?Technically, ECA is attempting to form a bottom in the $17-$20 area. We recommend that long-term, value-oriented investors initiate positions in ECA common up to $20, with a total return objective of 50% over the next two years.?
Of course, dividend investors hunting for underpriced stocks do have to be wary of companies that are so beaten-down their dividends are at risk. But that?s not a factor with Encana. As Slaughter wrote in November, ?In the meantime, profits aren?t exactly suffering. Last quarter, the company generated $1.2 billion ($1.57 per share) in cash flow, amply covering the $0.20 per share dividend.?
Most likely, someday, natural gas prices will go up. (I wrote the same thing months ago.) But I?m not going to say when. In the meantime, Encana pays its shareholders 80 cents a year in dividends.
If you buy it today at $20, that?s a guaranteed 4% yield per year, regardless of what happens to the stock price (assuming the dividend is maintained.) If you wait to buy until the stock returns to its 2010-early 2011 levels around $30, your yield would be cut to 2.6%.
And who knows, winter might arrive any day now.

Rare fungus kills endangered rattlesnakes in southern Illinois

A small population of rattlesnakes that already is in decline in southern Illinois faces a new and unexpected threat in the form of a fungus rarely seen in the wild, researchers report. The finding matches reports of rattlesnake deaths in the northeast United States.
The eastern massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus), a candidate for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act, suffers from habitat loss and environmental stresses wherever it is found, said University of Illinois comparative biosciences visiting instructor and wildlife veterinarian Matthew Allender, who led the health investigation. Long-term population studies of the snake ? in Illinois and elsewhere ? had never turned up evidence of debilitating fungal infections. But in 2008, biologists studying the snake reported to Allender that they had found three sick snakes in a park in southern Illinois, all with disfiguring lesions on their heads. The snakes died within three weeks of their discovery. A fourth snake with a similar syndrome was discovered in the same park in the spring of 2010.
Allender conducted necropsies on the snakes and identified the pathogen that had killed them: Chrysosporium, a fungus that plagues portions of the pet reptile industry but is not normally seen in the wild, he said.
"Chrysosporium causes disease in bearded dragons and in other snakes and it's a bad bug," Allender said. "We see it in captive animals worldwide, but we don't typically find it in free-ranging animals."
Chrysosporium also is emerging as a dangerous infection in humans with weakened immune systems, he said.
Shortly after he first presented his findings at a meeting of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Allender heard from other biologists about similar infections in snakes in the northeast United States.
"They seem to be having a similar problem in timber rattlesnakes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts," Allender said. Although biologists have sporadically identified Chrysosporium in those snakes, the symptoms they report ? facial swelling and ulcers and malformations of the jaw ? are the same, he said. These infections also occurred only within the last five years.
"Fungal pathogens have been increasingly associated with free-ranging epidemics in wildlife, including the well-known effects of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis on frog populations globally and white-nosed syndrome in bats," Allender wrote in a December 2011 report in Emerging Infectious Diseases. "Both of these diseases cause widespread and ongoing deaths in these populations that seriously threaten biodiversity across the United States."
Allender sees this new occurrence of a fungal infection in endangered snakes as a "yellow flag" that warrants more study.
"Wildlife diseases and human health are not that different," he said. "And often wildlife are our window into a weakened environment that leads to disease in both people and animals."

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Bruce Bochy has forbidden Buster Posey from blocking the plate. The Giants? manager confirmed it on Sunday, and much will be made of that decision.
But here is one more vital scrap of information: Posey was under the same order the night that Florida?s Scott Cousins speared him like a tackling dummy.
Bochy and other Giants officials had sat down Posey for that ?let?s be smart about this? conversation 10 months before the May 25 game in which he sustained three ripped ankle ligaments and a fractured bone in his leg.
The Giants already knew the risk involved with putting their best offensive player in a chest protector. They saw what happened in August, 2010, when the Cleveland Indians lost promising rookie Carlos Santana to a torn knee ligament in a collision at the plate. Shortly after that, Bochy sat down Posey and told him that saving one run wasn?t worth the risk.
And besides, as Posey rehashed the Cousins play during his meeting with reporters on Sunday, ?I want to make it clear I wasn't blocking the plate to begin with.?
?That's the dicey part I guess, is figuring where you've got to be to somewhat avoid that,? Posey continued. ?I have to be instinctual, that's the way I play the game. I try to play off instincts. Some of those instincts come off your preparation and that's why we're going to put in a lot of work this spring.?
But even the most thorough preparation cannot protect a catcher who is receiving the ball from one direction and absorbing a full-speed, 200-pound baserunner from the other. There is inherent risk everywhere on a baseball diamond, and no place is ?dicier? than behind the plate.
Perhaps the greater question isn?t whether Posey should block the plate, but whether he should be back there at all.
Candidly and surprisingly, Posey said he has asked himself the same question.
?I'm not going to lie,? he said. ?There were some thoughts a couple of months after, well, maybe it wouldn't be bad to move. But then the more I thought about it, I realized how much I enjoy catching. As hard as I'm going to work and have worked and am going to continue to work to get back behind the plate, I want to catch for as long as I possibly can.?
You?d better believe the Giants will have some things to say about that, too.
?There is going to come a point when we will certainly discuss whether it?s the right thing to make a move,? Bochy said. ?Right now, he?s our catcher.?
The smart money is that Posey won?t be a catcher for long beyond 2012. Bochy probably tipped his hand while lauding the stockpile of catchers in the system: A group that includes Tommy Joseph, Andrew Susac and Hector Sanchez.
?We have some good young catchers in camp ? the best I?ve ever seen,? Bochy said.
Sanchez is the closest to the big leagues after a monster winter in Venezuela. Susac is highly regarded after being taken as a sophomore out of Oregon State (by way of Jesuit High in Sacramento) in the draft last year. Joseph has the highest ceiling, given the huge strides he made behind the plate in the Cal League last season (he led the circuit in caught-stealing percentage) and the fact his bat played in High A ball as a 20-year-old.
As for the here and now, Bochy liked what he saw from Posey during Sunday?s workout.
?Blocking balls, there?s no hesitation getting up,? Bochy said. ?He looks like he?s over it. He?s healed. Now, having said that, he?s still got a long way to go, catching innings and seeing how he?ll react. But for now, he?s doing great.
?If there?s any question, it?s how much we can catch him.?
For that reason, the Giants are staying open-minded to carrying a third catcher. The current leaning is to carry two. (That decision would be easier if Pablo Sandoval could serve as a very occasional third catcher, but he made it very, very clear that he won?t have that conversation with the coaching staff.)

Bochy said he was glad to see Posey using the two-piece mask instead of the hockey-style helmet he had used in previous years. Concussions are a big part of that added risk behind the plate ? ask Mike Matheny about that ? and Bochy always thought the two-piece mask absorbed and distributed force more effectively.
?According to the studies, they?re the same,? Bochy said. ?But I always said the older mask protected you more.?
One other note: Posey said he is going to leave discussion of a rule change to the people who makes those decisions. He isn?t going to lobby for an amendment to protect catchers.
But Bochy isn?t going to set down his megaphone on this subject.
He got resistance last year from Joe Torre when he was MLB?s chief of on-field operations. But Torre stepped down and the league hasn?t named a replacement.
If it?s Tony LaRussa, then Bochy should be able to gain more traction on a rule change. LaRussa was receptive to the idea when Bochy discussed it with him last year. Several other managers also feel the issue merits more discussion, Bochy said.
Bochy said he?d continue his grass-roots efforts to gain consensus with his fellow managers on this topic.

Over four years of study, students can easily spend thousands of dollars on books on top of a hefty tuition. The situation is not much better in public elementary, middle and high schools, where taxpayers pick up the bill. California spends around $100 on every math and science book for its 2 million high school students, for example. But textbooks don?t have to be such a financial burden. Free digital open source textbooks are a promising alternative for states looking to cut costs and for universities trying to spare students from the soaring price of higher education. A growing number of laptop computers and tablets in the classroom provide an even greater opportunity to switch. Indeed, the fledgling open source textbook movement is getting extra attention these days. Experiments are underway in a number of states and districts. Last month, Utah?s State Office of Education said it would start a program to make open source textbooks available to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Washington State?s legislature is considering a similar program. The idea of open source textbooks is not new. They have been around for more than a decade, a period in which the major commercial publishers hiked textbook prices faster than inflation. Until recently, however, open source textbooks gained little traction, in part, because of the byzantine process for approving school books. State and local school boards, which insure that books meet standards, are not known for innovative thinking. California?s experiment with open source books started in 2009 when then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, facing a huge budget shortfall, endorsed a digital textbook initiative to quickly bring digital textbooks in the classroom. The effort, however, fell far short of the revolutionary change that he had hoped for. A state body evaluated a number of digital high school textbooks as to whether they met state standards. But the review served as merely a guide for local school districts, which have the ultimate say in which books they use and are under no requirement that those books be open source. Nor does it help the cause that most open source textbooks?produced by a mix of non-profits, academics and a handful of companies?lack the polish of the major commercial publishers like Pearson and McGraw-Hill. In Darkness: movie review
The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on the heroism of a Polish sewer inspector during the country's 1942 German occupation.
Agnieszka Holland's powerful "In Darkness" is set in 1942 in ?the eastern Polish city of Lvov at a time when it was occupied by the Germans and their Ukrainian allies. The city's Christian inhabitants, battered and war-weary, are still far better off than the Jews, whom the Nazis randomly shoot in the streets and ghettoize en route to their eventual deportation to concentration camps.

Leopold Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz) is a Polish sewer inspector who also doubles as a scavenger. To provide for his wife and daughter, and also, we sense, because he likes the thrill of the hunt, he and his accomplice (Krzysztof Skonieczny) loot the abandoned buildings of Jews. Because of Socha's knowledge of the sewers, the local Ukrainian Nazi officer offers him an added financial incentive to root out the Jews hiding underground.
Unlike most Holocaust-themed movies, even some of the strongest (like "Schindler's List"), "In Darkness," which is based on true events and is Oscar-nominated for best foreign film, doesn't draw clear lines of demarcation between the righteous and the venal. Socha initially keeps several Jewish families hidden away, not because he is noble but because the Jews make him a better offer ? a richer bribe. And the Jews crammed into the blackness and the stench are not sentimentalized. One man, for example, has abandoned his wife and daughter for his mistress, whom he likewise abandons when she becomes pregnant. With the exception of the group's leader, Mundek Margulies (Benno F?rmann), who is portrayed in classic stalwart-hero mold, none of the Jews are given the star treatment.
This is as it should be. Holland and her screenwriter David Shamoon (whose parents fled Baghdad to escape Iraq's persecution of Jews) understand that suffering isn't necessarily ennobling and that sometimes goodness emanates from the unlikeliest sources ? in this case, Socha. The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on his heroism. This man who dislikes Jews and initially thinks only of his own profit, gradually, fitfully, is transformed by the end into someone who risks even the lives of his own family, whom he loves, in order to save the people he calls "my Jews."
Holland has made excellent movies in this vein before, especially the 1991 "Europa Europa," but "In Darkness" is her most unremitting achievement. The reason we feel so close to Socha, a man who at first seems nothing more than a racist scoundrel, is that his moral odyssey, with its advances and retreats, is so emotionally believable. Holland could not have chosen a better actor to play Socha, whose burliness and blank eyes are, as it turns out, camouflage for the valiant human within. (Wieck?ie?wicz has been amply honored in Poland for his stage and film work, almost all of which is maddeningly unavailable in the United States.)
There are sequences in this film that are almost impossible to take, such as the one in which the cries of a mother's newborn risks exposing the entire group, but for the most part Holland avoids depicting the full horror of the Jews' entrapment. (The assumption is that we already know the horrors.) When the story is periodically brought above ground, into the daylight, the effect is both exhilarating and unsettling. The bright, wide world looks like freedom after all that blackness, but this is an illusion: Death is here, too.
In the film's climax, the rain pouring down from the sky threatens to turn the sewers into a death trap. This is when Socha demonstrates his true mettle. He is possessed beyond reason by his need to save the Jews. Like few other movies, "In Darkness" gets at the mania of those who would risk everything to save others. Socha is bewildered by the man he has become, and exultant, too. He astonishes himself ? and us. Grade: A (Rated R for violence, disturbing images, sexuality, nudity, and language.)?
